The Dust Of Uruzgan - Lee Kernaghan/Fred Smith[00:00:00]
Written by:Fred Smith[00:00:03]
In the ring they call me Warlord my mother calls me Paul[00:00:08]
You can call me Private Warren when you're filing your report[00:00:12]
As to how I came to be here this is what I understand[00:00:17]
In this hospital in Germany from the dust of Uruzgan[00:00:20]
You'd just turned twenty eight just bought a new car[00:00:35]
When you joined the first battalion of the big 1 RAR[00:00:39]
We were next up for deployment I south afghanistan[00:00:43]
To combat the insurgence in the dust of Uruzgan[00:00:47]
It took seven months of training just to get into the joint[00:00:53]
There were push ups and procedures[00:00:57]
And there was death by powerpoint[00:00:59]
Then the RSOI course in Ali Al Salaam[00:01:01]
But nothing can prepare you for the dust of Uruzgan[00:01:05]
Me and Benny sat together flying into Kandshar[00:01:09]
We sucked back on our near beers in the camp baker bar[00:01:12]
We were up at 05:30 we were on the Herc and out[00:01:17]
In twenty flying minutes we were in to tarin kowt[00:01:20]
We shook hands as the boys ripped out from MRTF one[00:01:24]
And pretty soon were out patrolling in the Afghan summer sun[00:01:28]
Walking through the green zones with a styer in my hand[00:01:32]
Body armour chafing through the dust of Uruzgan[00:01:36]
Well we started up near chora working fourteen hours a day[00:01:50]
Mentoring a kandak from the afghan fourth brigade[00:01:54]
Down through the baluchi into eastern dorafshan[00:01:58]
Working under open skies in the dust of Uruzgan[00:02:02]
It's a long long way from[00:02:06]
Townsville not like any place you've seen[00:02:07]
Suddenly you're walking through from the fourteenth century[00:02:10]
Women under burkhas tribal warlords rule a land[00:02:14]
Full of goats and huts and jungle trucks in the dust of Uruzgan[00:02:18]
And the education minister can neither read nor write[00:02:21]
And the minister for women runs a knock shop there at night[00:02:25]
They've been fighting there forever over water[00:02:29]
Food and land[00:02:32]
Murdering each other in the dust of Uruzgan[00:02:33]
There's nothing about this province[00:02:40]
That's remotely fair or just[00:02:41]
But worse than the corruption is the endless bloody dust[00:02:44]
It's as fine as talcum powder on the ground and in the air[00:02:48]
And it gets into your eyes and it gets into your hair[00:02:51]
And it gets in to your weapon and it gets in to your boots[00:02:55]
When bureaucrats all show up here it gets in to their suits[00:02:59]
And it gets in the machinery and it foils every plan[00:03:03]
There's something quite symbolic bout the dust of Uruzgan[00:03:07]
Still the people can be gracious and their courteous and smart[00:03:14]
And when the children look into your eyes they walk into your heart[00:03:17]
Face each day with courage and each year without a plan[00:03:21]
Beyond scratching for survival in the dust of Uruzgan[00:03:25]
But the taliban are restless keep the people terrorized[00:03:32]
With roadside bombs and hangings and leaving letters in the night[00:03:36]
And they have no useful vision for the children of this land[00:03:39]
But to keep them praying on their knees in the dust of Uruzgan[00:03:44]
It was a quite Saturday morning when the two shop made a call[00:04:10]
On a compound of interest to the east of COP Mashal[00:04:13]
We had some information they were building IED's[00:04:17]
So we condoned and we searched it in accord with SOP's[00:04:21]
I was on the west flank picket propped there with ben[00:04:25]
There to keep a watchful eye out while the other blokes went in[00:04:29]
We knew the signs of danger from the TTP's we'd learned[00:04:33]
But the nationals were moving back and forth without concern[00:04:37]
We'd been static there for hours when I shifted slightly back[00:04:41]
My foot tripped a AP mine and everything went black[00:04:44]
I woke up on a gurney flat out on my back[00:04:49]
Had to ask them seven times just to get the facts[00:04:52]
That I lived to tell the story through a simple twist of fate[00:04:56]
The main change lay ten foot away from the pressure plate[00:05:00]
You see the mine was linked[00:05:04]
By det cord to a bid charge laid by hand[00:05:05]
Hidden under benny by the dust of Uruzgan[00:05:08]
I was a queensland champ Thai Boxer now I look south on my knee[00:05:14]
And all I see is bed sheets where my foot use to be[00:05:18]
Benny's dead and buried underneath Australian sand[00:05:23]
But his spirit's out there wandering[00:05:26]
Through the dust the dust of Uruzgan[00:05:28]
Now I'm going back to Townsville it's the city of my birth[00:06:10]
Well some go back to ballarat and some go back to perth[00:06:13]
I'll be living with my mother who's still trying to understand[00:06:17]
Why we're spending blood and treasure in the dust in the dust of Uruzgan[00:06:21]
