Men Who Come Behind - Slim Dusty (西林·得斯提)[00:00:00]
Written by:Slim Dusty/Henry Lawson[00:00:01]
There's a class of men and women[00:00:08]
Who are always on their guard[00:00:11]
Cunning treacherous suspicious[00:00:14]
Feeling softly grasping hard[00:00:16]
Yet without the courage[00:00:20]
To forsake the beaten track[00:00:22]
Wearily they feel their way behind[00:00:25]
A bolder spirit's back[00:00:28]
They will stick to you as sin does[00:00:32]
While your money comes and goes[00:00:35]
But they'll leave you when you haven't[00:00:38]
Got a dollar in your clothes[00:00:40]
And you may get some help from others[00:00:43]
But you'll nearly always find[00:00:46]
That you cannot get assistance[00:00:49]
From the men who come behind[00:00:52]
There are many far too many[00:00:56]
In this world of prose and rhyme[00:00:59]
Always looking for another's[00:01:02]
Footprints on the sands of time[00:01:05]
Journalistic imitators[00:01:08]
Are the meanest of mankind[00:01:11]
And the grandest themes are hackneyed[00:01:14]
By the pens that come behind[00:01:16]
If you strike a novel subject[00:01:45]
Write it up and do not fail[00:01:48]
They will rhyme and prose about it[00:01:51]
Till your very own is stale[00:01:54]
As they raved about the bushland[00:01:57]
That the wattle boughs perfume[00:02:00]
Till the reader cursed that region[00:02:03]
And the stink of wattle bloom[00:02:05]
They will follow in your footsteps[00:02:09]
While you're groping for the light[00:02:13]
But they'll run to get before you[00:02:15]
When they see you're going right[00:02:18]
And they'll trip you up and baulk you[00:02:21]
In their blind and greedy heat[00:02:24]
Like a stupid pup hat hasn't[00:02:27]
Learned to trail behind your feet[00:02:29]
So take your loads of sin and sorrow[00:02:33]
On an energetic back[00:02:37]
Go and strike across the country[00:02:40]
Where there isn't any track[00:02:42]
And I fancy that the subject[00:02:45]
Could be further treated here[00:02:48]
But we'll leave it to be hackneyed[00:02:51]
By the fellows in the rear[00:02:54]
Oh there are many far too many[00:02:57]
In this world of prose and rhyme[00:03:01]
Always looking for another's[00:03:04]
Footsteps on the sands of time[00:03:06]
Journalistic imitators[00:03:10]
Are the meanest of mankind[00:03:12]
And the grandest themes are hackneyed[00:03:15]
By the pens that come behind[00:03:18]
