And so finally here we are at the beginning of a whole new era[00:00:53]
The start of a brand new world[00:01:01]
And now what[00:01:06]
How do we start[00:01:08]
How do we begin again[00:01:11]
There are some things you can simply look up such as:[00:01:19]
The size of Greenland the dates of the famous 19th century rubber wars Persian adjectives the composition of snow[00:01:23]
And other things you just have to guess at[00:01:39]
And then again today's the day and those were the days and now these are the days and now the clock points histrionically to noon[00:01:46]
Some new kind of north[00:01:56]
And so which way do we go[00:01:59]
What are days for[00:02:09]
To wake us up to put between the endless nights[00:02:14]
And by the way here's my theory of punctuation:[00:02:24]
Instead of a period at the end of each sentence there should be a tiny clock that shows you how long it took you to write that sentence[00:02:29]
And another way to look at time is this:[00:02:43]
There was an old married couple and they had always hated each other never been able to stand the sight of each other really[00:02:46]
And when they were in their nineties they finally got divorced[00:02:57]
And people said:Why did you wait so long Why didn't you do this a whole lot earlier[00:03:02]
And they said:Well we wanted to wait until the children died[00:03:14]
Ah America[00:03:27]
And yes that will be America[00:03:30]
A whole new place just waiting to happen[00:03:33]
Broken up parking lots rotten dumps speed balls accidents and hesitations[00:03:39]
Things left behind[00:03:48]
Styrofoam computer chips[00:03:51]
And Jim and John oh they were there[00:04:02]
And Carol too[00:04:06]
Her hair pinned up in that weird beehive way she loved so much[00:04:08]
And Greg and Phil moving at the pace of summer[00:04:17]
And Uncle Al who screamed all night in the attic[00:04:22]
Yes something happened to him in the war they said over in France[00:04:26]
And France had become something they never mentioned[00:04:31]
Something dangerous[00:04:36]
Yeah some were sad to see those days disappear[00:04:46]
The flea markets and their smells the war[00:04:52]
All the old belongings strewn out on the sidewalks[00:04:57]
Mildewed clothes and old resentments and ragged record jackets[00:05:02]
And ah these days[00:05:12]
Oh these days[00:05:15]
What are days for[00:05:20]
To wake us up to put between the endless nights[00:05:24]
And meanwhile all over town checks are bouncing and accounts are being automatically closed[00:05:37]
Passwords are expiring[00:05:45]
And everyone's counting and comparing and predicting[00:05:47]
Will it be the best of times will it be the worst of times or will it just be another one of those times[00:05:50]
Show of hands please[00:06:02]
And ah this world which like Kierkegaard said can only be understood when lived backwards[00:06:13]
Which would entail an incredible amount of planning and confusion[00:06:25]
And then there are those big questions always in the back of your mind[00:06:33]
Things like:Are those two people over there actually my real parents[00:06:38]
Should I get a second Prius[00:06:47]
And you you who can be silent in four languages:Your silence will be considered your consent[00:06:52]
Oh but those were the days before the audience and what the audience wanted and what the audience said it wanted[00:07:13]
And you know the reason I really love the stars is that we cannot hurt them[00:07:27]
We can't burn them or melt them or make them overflow[00:07:37]
We can't flood them or blow them up or turn them out[00:07:43]
But we are reaching for them[00:07:52]
We are reaching for them[00:07:58]
Some say our empire is passing as all empires do[00:08:10]
And others haven't a clue what time it is or where it goes or even where the clock is[00:08:18]
And oh the majesty of dreams[00:08:31]
An unstoppable train[00:08:36]
Different colored wonderlands[00:08:40]
Freedom of speech and s*x with strangers[00:08:45]
Dear old God:May I call you old[00:08:59]
And may I ask:Who are these people[00:09:07]
Ah America[00:09:10]
We saw it[00:09:16]
We tipped it over and then we sold it[00:09:18]
These are the things I whisper softly to my dolls[00:09:27]
Those heartless little thugs dressed in calico kilts and jaunty hats and their perpetual white toothy smiles[00:09:31]
And oh my brothers[00:09:44]
And oh my sisters[00:09:48]
What are days for[00:09:51]
Days are where we live[00:09:55]
They flow and then they flow[00:10:00]
They come they fade they go and they go[00:10:03]
No way to know exactly when they start or when their time is up[00:10:09]
Oh another day another dime[00:10:17]
Another day in America[00:10:24]
Another day another dollar[00:10:30]
Another day in America[00:10:37]
And all my brothers[00:10:46]
And all my long lost sisters[00:10:49]
How do we begin again[00:10:57]
How do we begin[00:11:05]
