There are strange things done 'neath the midnight sun[00:00:00]
By the men who moil for gold.[00:00:03]
The arctic trails have their secret tales[00:00:06]
That would make your blood run cold.[00:00:09]
The northern lights have seen queer sights[00:00:12]
But the queerest they ever did see,[00:00:15]
Was that night on the marge of Lake LeBarge[00:00:17]
I cremated Sam McGee.[00:00:20]
Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee[00:00:23]
Where the cotton blooms and blows.[00:00:26]
Why he left his home in the south to roam[00:00:28]
Round the pole, God only knows.[00:00:31]
He was always cold, but the land of gold[00:00:33]
Seemed to hold him like a spell,[00:00:36]
Though he'd often say in his homely way[00:00:38]
That he'd sooner live in Hell.[00:00:41]
On a Christmas day we were mushing our way[00:00:44]
Over the Dawson trail.[00:00:47]
Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold[00:00:49]
It stabbed like a driven nail.[00:00:53]
If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze[00:00:55]
Til sometimes we couldn't see.[00:00:58]
It wasn't much fun, but the only one[00:01:01]
To whimper was Sam McGee.[00:01:03]
And that very night while we lay packed tight[00:01:06]
In our robes beneath the snow,[00:01:08]
And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'er head[00:01:11]
Were dancing heel and toe,[00:01:13]
He turns to me, and "Cap" says he[00:01:16]
"I'll cash in this trip, I guess.[00:01:19]
And if I do, I'm asking that you[00:01:22]
Won't refuse my last request."[00:01:24]
Well, he looked so low that I couldn't say no,[00:01:27]
Then he says with a sort of a moan,[00:01:30]
"It's the cursed cold, it's got right hold[00:01:33]
Til I'm chilled clean through to the bone.[00:01:37]
Yet tain't being dead, it's my awful dread[00:01:40]
Of an icy grave that pains.[00:01:43]
So I want you to swear that foul or fair,[00:01:46]
You'll cremate my last remains."[00:01:50]
Well, a friend's last need is a thing to heed,[00:01:54]
So I swore I would not fail.[00:01:58]
We started on at the streak of dawn,[00:02:00]
But, God, he looked ghastly pale![00:02:02]
He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day[00:02:06]
Of his home in Tennessee,[00:02:09]
And before nightfall, a corpse was all[00:02:11]
That was left of Sam McGee.[00:02:14]
There wasn't a breath in that land of death,[00:02:18]
And I hurried on, horror driven[00:02:20]
With a corpse half hid, that I couldn't get rid,[00:02:23]
Because of a promise given.[00:02:25]
It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say,[00:02:28]
"You may tax your brawn and brains,[00:02:30]
But you promised true, and it's up to you[00:02:34]
To cremate these last remains."[00:02:37]
Now, a promise made is a debt unpaid[00:02:41]
And the trail has its own stern code,[00:02:44]
In the days to come, though my lips were numb[00:02:47]
In my heart, how I cursed that load.[00:02:51]
In the long, long night, by the lone firelight[00:02:54]
While the huskiers, round in a ring[00:02:57]
Howled out their woes to the homeless snows[00:03:00]
Oh God! How I loathed the thing.[00:03:02]
And every day that quiet clay[00:03:06]
Seemed to heavy and heavier grow.[00:03:08]
But on I went, though the dogs were spent[00:03:11]
And the grub was getting low.[00:03:13]
The trail was bad, and I felt half mad,[00:03:15]
But I swore I would not give in.[00:03:18]
And I'd often sing to the hateful thing[00:03:21]
And it harkened with a grin![00:03:24]
Then I came to the marge of Lake LeBarge[00:03:27]
And a derelict there lay.[00:03:30]
It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice[00:03:32]
It was called the "Alice May".[00:03:35]
And I looked at it, and I thought a bit,[00:03:37]
And I looked at my frozen chum,[00:03:40]
Then "Here" said I with a sudden cry[00:03:42]
"is my cre-ma-tor-eum!"[00:03:45]
Some planks I tore from the cabin floor[00:03:48]
And I lit the boiler fire.[00:03:50]
Some coal I found that was lying around[00:03:52]
And I heaped the fuel higher.[00:03:55]
The flames just soared and the furnace roared,[00:03:58]
Such a blaze you seldom see.[00:04:00]
Then I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal[00:04:02]
And I stuffed in Sam McGee.[00:04:04]
Then I made a hike, for I didn't like[00:04:07]
To hear him sizzle so.[00:04:09]
And the heavens scowled and the huskies howled[00:04:11]
And the wind began to blow.[00:04:13]
It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled[00:04:15]
Down my cheeks, and I don't know why.[00:04:18]
And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak[00:04:21]
Went streaking down the sky.[00:04:23]
I do not know how long in the snow[00:04:27]
I wrestled with grisly fear.[00:04:29]
But the stars were out and they danced about[00:04:31]
Ere again I ventured near.[00:04:34]
I was sick with dread, but I bravely said[00:04:36]
"I'll just take a peek inside.[00:04:39]
He's probably cooked, and it's time I looked."[00:04:42]
Then the door I opened wide.[00:04:45]
And there sat Sam, looking cold and calm[00:04:47]
In the heart of the furnace roar.[00:04:50]
He wore a smile you could see a mile,[00:04:52]
And he said "Please close that door![00:04:55]
It's fine in here, but I greatly fear[00:04:56]
You'll let in the cold and storm.[00:04:59]
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee,[00:05:01]
It's the first time I've been warm."[00:05:05]
There are strange things done 'neath the midnight sun[00:05:09]
By the men who moil for gold.[00:05:11]
The arctic trails have their secret tales[00:05:14]
That would make your blood run cold.[00:05:17]

But the queerest they ever did see[00:05:22]
