Family Grave - Jake Thackray[00:00:00]
I’ve got uncles and aunties and[00:00:08]
Cousins and nephews and sisters-in-law [00:00:09]
Our family swarms with them; it teems;[00:00:12]
They are thicker than flies [00:00:14]
Sisters and brothers and cousins[00:00:16]
And daughters and mothers galore [00:00:17]
The only time when all of us[00:00:19]
Meet is when one of us dies [00:00:21]
At the grave at the grave [00:00:23]
At the family family grave [00:00:25]
Whenever you go there’s[00:00:27]
Always more arrive [00:00:29]
At the grave at the grave [00:00:31]
At the family family grave [00:00:33]
For every dead one there are[00:00:35]
Dozens of us alive live live[00:00:37]
Dead but there are dozens of us alive [00:00:39]
Take a family christening well[00:00:50]
Nobody goes to those [00:00:52]
And a family wedding more often[00:00:54]
Than not’s an all ticket affair [00:00:55]
But a funeral’s free for all you can[00:00:58]
Go in the same old clothes[00:01:00]
No need to buy him a present[00:01:02]
So all of the family’s there [00:01:03]
You sit in the chapel and whisper[00:01:06]
And meditate over the stiff [00:01:07]
You never speak ill of him – especially[00:01:09]
If you were close -[00:01:11]
But: "What a good family man and a[00:01:13]
Wonderful friend " even if[00:01:15]
The defunct was a pain in the arse[00:01:17]
And he died of a dose [00:01:19]
At the grave at the grave at the family [00:01:21]
Family grave [00:01:24]
Whenever you go there’s always more arrive [00:01:25]
At the grave at the grave at the[00:01:29]
Family family grave [00:01:31]
For every dead one there are dozens[00:01:32]
Of us alive live live[00:01:34]
Dead but there are dozens of us alive [00:01:37]
There are those of course who just stand[00:01:48]
Aghast and just gawp[00:01:50]
They cannot manage to cry – and there’s[00:01:52]
Others who cannot refrain:[00:01:54]
Willy-nilly they bellow and howl[00:01:56]
At the drop of a corpse [00:01:58]
In a couple of weeks they’ve forgotten[00:02:00]
The poor bastard’s name [00:02:01]
Then there are those of course who[00:02:04]
Turn up and can then hardly wait[00:02:05]
For the coffin to drop and the vicar to[00:02:07]
Stop the and the sobbing subside [00:02:09]
And then they are barely a blur as[00:02:11]
They sprint for the cemetery gates[00:02:13]
To go get their hands on the money [00:02:15]
The food or the widow’s backside [00:02:16]
Bt the grave by the grave [00:02:19]
By the family family grave [00:02:21]
Whenever you go there’s[00:02:23]
Always more arrive [00:02:24]
At the grave at the grave [00:02:27]
At the family family grave [00:02:29]
For every dead one there are[00:02:30]
Dozens of us alive live live[00:02:32]
Dead but there are dozens of us alive [00:02:35]
There are one or two "do"s turn out[00:02:46]
Disappointingly in the extreme [00:02:48]
Where the booze is rough and the grub[00:02:50]
Is duff and no flowers at all [00:02:51]
And the mother embarrasses you with a[00:02:54]
Sudden hysterical scream [00:02:55]
Where the coffin you came to see off[00:02:58]
Is pathetically small [00:03:00]
We do the round of the family faces[00:03:02]
And pay our respects[00:03:03]
The "We’ll have to be going " "How nice "[00:03:05]
"How sad " The "Thankings you "[00:03:07]
We are studying form and weighing up[00:03:09]
Who it is going to be next[00:03:11]
To go under the slab Whose turn to[00:03:13]
Pay for the very next "do" [00:03:15]
Bt the grave by the grave by the[00:03:17]
Family family grave [00:03:19]
Whenever you go there’s always more arrive [00:03:21]
At the grave at the grave at the[00:03:25]
Family family grave [00:03:27]
For every dead one there are[00:03:29]
Dozens of us alive live live[00:03:30]
Dead but there are dozens of us alive[00:03:33]
