The Sick Note - The Dubliners[00:00:00]
Dear Sir I write this note to you[00:00:09]
To tell you of me plight[00:00:11]
And at the time of writing [00:00:14]
I am not a pretty sight;[00:00:15]
My body is all black and blue [00:00:17]
My face a deathly gray[00:00:20]
And I write this note to say[00:00:22]
Why Paddy's not at work today [00:00:25]
While working on the fourteenth floor[00:00:28]
Some bricks I had to clear;[00:00:31]
Now to throw them down from[00:00:33]
Such a height was not a good idea [00:00:34]
The foreman wasn't very pleased [00:00:37]
He beeing an awkward sod[00:00:39]
He said I'd have to cart them down[00:00:41]
The ladders in me hod [00:00:43]
Now clearing all these bricks[00:00:46]
By hand it was so very slow [00:00:48]
So I hoisted up a barrel[00:00:51]
And secured the rope below [00:00:53]
But in me haste to do the job[00:00:55]
I was to blind to see[00:00:58]
That a barrelful of building bricks[00:01:00]
Was heavier than me [00:01:02]
So when I untied the rope[00:01:06]
The barrel fell like lead[00:01:07]
And clinging tightly to the rope[00:01:09]
I started up instead [00:01:11]
Well I shot up like a rocket[00:01:14]
Till to my dismay I found[00:01:16]
That halfway up[00:01:19]
I met the bloody barrel comming down [00:01:20]
Well the barrel broke me shoulder[00:01:24]
As to the ground it sped [00:01:26]
And when I reached the top[00:01:28]
I banged the pully with my head [00:01:30]
Well I clung on tight through numbed[00:01:33]
Shock from this almighty blow[00:01:35]
And the barrel spilled out half[00:01:38]
The bricks fourteen floors below [00:01:39]
Now when these bricks had fallen[00:01:43]
From the barrel to the floor[00:01:45]
I then outweighed the barrel and[00:01:48]
So started down once more;[00:01:50]
Still clinging tightly to the rope [00:01:53]
I sped towards the ground [00:01:55]
And I landed on the brocken bricks[00:01:57]
That were all scattered round [00:01:59]
Well I lay there groaning on the ground [00:02:02]
I thougth I'd passed the worst [00:02:05]
When the barrel hit the pully-wheel[00:02:08]
And then the bottom burst [00:02:10]
Well a shower of bricks rained down on me [00:02:12]
I hadn't got a hope[00:02:15]
As I lay there moaning on the ground [00:02:17]
I let go of the bloody rope [00:02:21]
The barrel than being heavier [00:02:24]
It started down once more [00:02:26]
And landed right across me [00:02:28]
As I lay upon the floor [00:02:30]
Well it broke three ribs[00:02:34]
And my left arm and I can only say[00:02:35]
That I hope you'll understand[00:02:40]
Why Paddy's not at work today[00:02:42]
