Downbound Train - Chuck Berry[00:00:00]
Written by:Berry[00:00:02]
A stranger laying on a bar room floor[00:00:14]
Had drank so much he couldn't drink no more[00:00:18]
So he fell asleep with a troubled brain[00:00:21]
To dream that he rode on that down bound train[00:00:24]
The engine with blood was sweaty and damp[00:00:32]
And brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp[00:00:35]
And imps for fuel was shoveling bones[00:00:38]
While the furnace rang with a thousand groans[00:00:41]
The boiler was filled with lager beer[00:00:50]
The devil himself was the engineer[00:00:53]
Passengers were most a motley crew[00:00:56]
Some were foreigners and others he knew[00:00:59]
Rich men and lost beggars in rags[00:01:02]
Handsome young ladies and wicked old hags[00:01:05]
As the train rushed on at a terrible pace[00:01:28]
Sulphuric fumes scorched their hands and face[00:01:32]
Wider and wider the country grew[00:01:35]
Faster and faster the engine flew[00:01:38]
Louder and louder the thunder crashed[00:01:42]
Brighter and brighter the lighting flashed[00:01:45]
Hotter and hotter the air became[00:01:48]
Till their clothes were burned with each quivering refrain[00:01:51]
Then out of the din there came a yell[00:01:54]
Ha ha said the devil we're nearing home[00:01:58]
Oh how the passengers shrieked with pain[00:02:02]
And begged ol' satan to stop that train[00:02:04]
The stranger awoke with an anguished cry[00:02:12]
His clothes wet with sweat and his hair standing high[00:02:16]
He fell on his knees on the bar room floor[00:02:19]
And prayed a prayer like never before[00:02:22]
And the prayers and vows were not in vain[00:02:33]
For he never rode that down bound train[00:02:38]
