Written by:Trad;ArrGuthrie[00:00:00]
Take a trip with me in 1913[00:00:05]
To Calumet Michigan in the copper country[00:00:10]
I'll take you to a place called Italian Hall[00:00:14]
When the miners are having their big Christmas ball[00:00:20]
I will take you in a door and up a high stairs[00:00:28]
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere[00:00:32]
I will let you shake hands with the people you see[00:00:37]
And watch the kids dance around the big Christmas tree[00:00:43]
You ask about work and you ask about pay[00:00:51]
They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day[00:00:56]
Working the copper claims risking their lives[00:01:01]
So it's fun to spend christmas with children and wives[00:01:05]
There's talking and laughing and songs in the air[00:01:13]
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere[00:01:17]
Before you know it you're friends with us all[00:01:22]
And you're dancing around and around in the hall[00:01:26]
Well a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights[00:01:34]
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:37]
To hear all this fun you would not realize[00:01:41]
That the copper boss thug men are milling outside[00:01:45]
The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door[00:01:52]
One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire[00:01:56]
A lady she hollered there's no such a thing[00:02:00]
Keep on with your party there's no such thing[00:02:04]
A few people rushed and it was only a few[00:02:10]
It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you[00:02:13]
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down[00:02:18]
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out[00:02:22]
And then others followed a hundred or more[00:02:29]
But most everybody remained on the floor[00:02:32]
The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke[00:02:36]
While the children were smothered on the stairs by the door[00:02:40]
Such a terrible sight I never did see[00:02:46]
We carried our children back up to their tree[00:02:50]
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree[00:02:55]
And the children that died there were seventy-three[00:03:01]
The piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:08]
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon[00:03:12]
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned[00:03:17]
See what your greed for money has done[00:03:24]
