1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliot[00:00:00]

Written by:Guthrie Trad[00:00:01]

Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen[00:00:04]

To calumet Michigan in the copper country[00:00:09]

I'll take you to place called Italian hall[00:00:15]

And the miners are having their big Christmas ball[00:00:22]

I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs[00:00:29]

Singing and dancing is heard everywhere[00:00:34]

I will let you shake hands with the people you see[00:00:39]

And watch the kids dance 'round the big Christmas tree[00:00:44]

There's talkin' and laughin' and songs in the air[00:00:52]

And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere[00:00:56]

Before you know it you're friends with us all[00:01:00]

And you're dancing around and around in the hall[00:01:05]

You ask about work and you ask about pay[00:01:11]

They'll tell you they make less than a dollar a day[00:01:15]

Working the copper claims risking their lives[00:01:19]

So it's fun to spend Christmas with children and wives[00:01:24]

Hey a little girl sits down by the Christmas tree lights[00:01:31]

To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:35]

To hear all this fun you had not realize[00:01:39]

That the copper boss thug men they are milling outside[00:01:43]

The copper boss thugs stuck their heads in the door[00:01:49]

One of them yelled and he screamed there's a fire[00:01:53]

A lady she hollered there's no such a thing[00:01:57]

Keep on with your party there's no such a thing[00:02:02]

A few people rushed and it's only a few[00:02:07]

It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you[00:02:11]

A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down[00:02:15]

But the thugs held the door and he could not get out[00:02:19]

And then others followed a hundred or more[00:02:25]

Most everybody remained on the floor[00:02:29]

The gun thugs they laughed at their murderous joke[00:02:33]

And the children were smothered on the stair by the door[00:02:39]

Such a terrible sight I never did see[00:02:45]

We carried our children back up to their tree[00:02:50]

The scabs outside still laughed at their spree[00:02:55]

And the children that died there were seventy three[00:03:01]

Piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:12]

And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon[00:03:16]

The parents they cried and the miners they moaned[00:03:21]

See what your greed for money has done[00:03:28]
