Sweeney - Slim Dusty[00:00:00]
Written by:Slim Dusty/Henry Lawson[00:00:01]
It was somewhere in september[00:00:03]
And the sun was goin' down[00:00:05]
When I came in search of coffee[00:00:08]
To a darling river town[00:00:11]
Come and have a drink we'll call it[00:00:15]
Tis a fitting name I think[00:00:18]
And was raining[00:00:20]
For a wonder up at[00:00:21]
Come and have a drink[00:00:23]
Underneath the pub verander[00:00:27]
I was resting on a bunk[00:00:30]
When a stranger Rose before me[00:00:32]
And he said that he was drunk[00:00:35]
He apologised for speaking[00:00:39]
There was no offence he swore[00:00:42]
But he somehow seemed to fancy that[00:00:45]
He'd seen my face before[00:00:47]
He agreed you can't remember[00:00:52]
All the chaps you chance to meet[00:00:54]
And he said his name was Sweeney[00:00:57]
People lived in sussex street[00:00:59]
He was camping in a stable[00:01:03]
That he swore that he was right[00:01:06]
Only for the blanky horses[00:01:09]
Walkin' over him all night[00:01:11]
He'd apparently been fighting[00:01:16]
For his face was black and blue[00:01:18]
And it looked as though the horses[00:01:21]
Had been treading on him too[00:01:23]
But an honest genial twinkle[00:01:28]
In the eye that wasn't hurt[00:01:30]
Seemed to hint of something better[00:01:33]
Spite of drink and rags and dirt[00:01:35]
He was born in parramatta[00:01:40]
And he said with humour grim[00:01:42]
That he'd like to see the city[00:01:45]
Ever liquor finished him[00:01:47]
But he couldn't raise the money[00:01:52]
He was d**ned if he could think[00:01:54]
What the government was doing here[00:01:57]
He offered me a drink[00:02:00]
I declined was self denial[00:02:04]
And I lectured him on booze[00:02:06]
Using all the hackneyed arguments[00:02:09]
That preachers mostly use[00:02:12]
Things I'd heard in temperance lectures[00:02:16]
I was young and rather green[00:02:19]
And I ended by referring to the man[00:02:21]
He might have been[00:02:25]
But he couldn't stay to argue[00:02:28]
For his beer was nearly gone[00:02:31]
He was glad[00:02:33]
He said to meet me[00:02:34]
And he'd see me later on[00:02:36]
But he guessed he'd have to go[00:02:40]
And get his bottle filled again[00:02:42]
And he gave a lurch and vanished in the[00:02:45]
Darkness and the rain[00:02:48]
And the afternoons in cities[00:02:53]
When the rain is on[00:02:56]
The land[00:02:57]
Visions come to me of Sweeney[00:02:59]
With his bottle in[00:03:01]
His hand[00:03:03]
