Reverend Mr Black - The Kingston Trio[00:00:04]
He rode easy in the saddle he was tall and lean[00:00:08]
And at first ya thought nothin'[00:00:11]
But a streak of mean[00:00:12]
Make a man look so downright strong[00:00:13]
But one look in his eyes[00:00:15]
And ya knowed ya was wrong[00:00:17]
He was a mountain of a man and I[00:00:19]
Want ya to know[00:00:21]
He could preach hot hell in the freezin' snow[00:00:22]
He carried a bible in a canvas sack[00:00:25]
The folks just called him the reverend Mr black[00:00:28]
He was poor as a beggar but he rode like a king[00:00:31]
And sometimes in the evenin' I could hear him sing[00:00:34]
I got to walk that lonesome valley[00:00:38]
I got to walk it by myself[00:00:43]
For nobody else can walk it for me[00:00:48]
I got to walk it by myself[00:00:53]
If ever I could have thought this man in black[00:00:59]
Was soft had any yellow up his back[00:01:02]
I gave that notion up the day[00:01:04]
A lumberjack came in and a wasn't a prayin'[00:01:07]
Yeah he kicked open the meetin'house door[00:01:11]
And he cussed everybody up and down the floor[00:01:13]
And then when things got quiet in the place[00:01:16]
He walked up and cussed in the preacher's face[00:01:18]
He hit that reverend like the kick of a mule[00:01:22]
And to my way of thinkin' it took a pure fool[00:01:25]
To turn the other cheek to that lumberjack[00:01:27]
But that's what he did the reverend Mr black[00:01:30]
He stood like a rock a man among men[00:01:34]
Then he let that lumberjack hit him again[00:01:36]
And then with a voice as kind as could be[00:01:39]
He cut him down like a big oak tree when he said[00:01:41]
You got to walk that lonesome valley[00:01:45]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:01:50]
For nobody else can walk it for you[00:01:55]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:02:00]
It's been many years since we had to part[00:02:06]
And I guess I learned his ways by heart[00:02:09]
I can still hear his sermons ring[00:02:11]
Down in the valley where he used to sing[00:02:14]
I followed him yes Sir and I don't regret it[00:02:18]
Hope that I'll always be a credit to his memory[00:02:21]
'Cause I want ya to understand[00:02:23]
The reverend Mr black was my old man[00:02:26]
You got to walk that lonesome valley[00:02:29]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:02:34]
For nobody else can walk it for you[00:02:39]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:02:44]
You got to walk that lonesome valley[00:02:49]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:02:55]
For nobody else can walk it for you[00:02:59]
You got to walk it by yourself[00:03:05]
