A Boy Named Sue(Live at The White House, Washington D.C., A)

A Boy Named Sue(Live at The White House Washington D C A) - Johnny Cash[00:00:00]

My daddy left home when I was three[00:00:09]

And he didn't leave much to ma and me[00:00:12]

Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze[00:00:14]

Now I don't blame him cause he run and hid[00:00:19]

But the meanest thing that my dady ever did[00:00:21]

Was before he left he went and named me Sue[00:00:23]

Well he must of thought that is quite a joke[00:00:27]

And it got a lot of laughs from a lots of folk[00:00:30]

It seems I had to fight my whole life through[00:00:32]

Some gal would giggle and I'd get red[00:00:37]

And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head[00:00:39]

I tell ya life ain't easy for a boy named Sue[00:00:41]

Well I grew up quick and I grew up mean[00:00:46]

My fist got hard and my wits got keen[00:00:48]

I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame[00:00:50]

But I made a vow to the moon and stars[00:00:55]

That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars[00:00:57]

And kill that man who gave me that awful name[00:01:00]

Well it was Gatlinburg in mid-July[00:01:04]

And I just hit town and my throat was dry[00:01:06]

I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew[00:01:09]

At an old saloon on a street of mud[00:01:13]

There at a table dealing stud[00:01:16]

Sat the dirty mangy dog that named me Sue[00:01:18]

Well I knew that snake was my own sweet dad[00:01:22]

From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had[00:01:25]

And I knew that scar on his cheek[00:01:27]

And his evil eye[00:01:29]

He was big and bent and gray and old[00:01:32]

And I looked at him and my blood ran cold[00:01:34]

And I said My name is Sue How do you do[00:01:37]

Now your gonna die[00:01:41]

Well I hit him hard right between the eyes[00:01:50]

And he went down but to my surprise[00:01:52]

He come up with a knife and cut off a[00:01:55]

Piece of my ear[00:01:56]

But I busted a chair right across his teeth[00:01:59]

And we crashed through the wall and[00:02:01]

Into the street[00:02:03]

Kicking and gouging in the mud and[00:02:04]

The blood and the beer[00:02:06]

I tell ya I've fought tougher men[00:02:08]

But I really can't remember when[00:02:10]

He kicked like a mule and he bit[00:02:13]

Like a crocodile[00:02:15]

I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss[00:02:17]

He went for his gun and I pulled mine first[00:02:19]

He stood there looking at me and[00:02:22]

I saw him smile[00:02:24]

And he said Son this world is rough[00:02:26]

And if a man's gonna make it[00:02:28]

He's gotta be tough[00:02:29]

And I knew I wouldn't be there to help you along[00:02:30]

So I give you that name and I said goodbye[00:02:34]

I knew you'd have to get tough or die[00:02:37]

And it's the name that helped to[00:02:39]

Make you strong[00:02:41]

He said Now you just fought one[00:02:43]

Hell of a fight[00:02:45]

And I know you hate me and you got the right[00:02:46]

To kill me now and I wouldn't blame you if you do[00:02:48]

But you ought to thank me before I die[00:02:53]

For the gravel in you guts and the spit in you eye[00:02:55]

Cause I'm the that named you Sue[00:02:57]

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun[00:03:06]

And I called him my pa and he called me his son[00:03:09]

And I came away with a different point of view[00:03:11]

And I think about him now and then[00:03:15]

Every time I try and every time I win[00:03:17]

And if I ever have a boy I guss[00:03:20]

I'm gonna call him[00:03:22]

George calder kim[00:03:23]
