The Great Dust Storm - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
On the 14th day of April of 1935[00:00:03]
There struck the worst of dust storms that ever filled the sky[00:00:10]
You could see that dust storm comin' the cloud looked deathlike black[00:00:17]
And through our mighty nation it left a dreadful track[00:00:24]
From Oklahoma City to the Arizona line[00:00:31]
Dakota and Nebraska to the lazy Rio Grande[00:00:38]
It fell across our city like a curtain of black rolled down[00:00:45]
We thought it was our judgement we thought it was our doom[00:00:51]
The radio reported we listened with alarm[00:00:58]
The wild and windy actions of this great mysterious storm[00:01:05]
From Albuquerque and Clovis and all New Mexico[00:01:12]
They said it was the blackest that ever they had saw[00:01:19]
From old Dodge City Kansas the dust had rung their knell[00:01:26]
And a few more comrades sleeping on top of old Boot Hill[00:01:33]
From Denver Colorado they said it blew so strong[00:01:40]
They thought that they could hold out but[00:01:47]
They didn't know how long[00:01:50]
Our relatives were huddled into their oil boom shacks[00:01:54]
And the children they was cryin' as it whistled through the cracks[00:02:00]
And the family it was crowded into their little room[00:02:07]
They thought the world had ended and[00:02:14]
They thought it was their doom[00:02:18]
The storm took place at sundown it lasted through the night[00:02:21]
When we looked out next morning we saw a terrible sight[00:02:28]
We saw outside our window where wheat fields they had grown[00:02:35]
Was now a rippling ocean of dust the wind had blown[00:02:43]
It covered up our fences it covered up our barns[00:02:49]
It covered up our tractors in this wild and dusty storm[00:02:56]
We loaded our jalopies and piled our families in[00:03:03]
We rattled down that highway to never come back again[00:03:10]
