Diarmuid and Grainne

Diarmuid And Grainne - Cruachan[00:00:01]

The years they passed like a flowing stream[00:00:35]

In a highland vale shrouded in green [00:00:37]

The Fianna marched with Fionn at their helm [00:00:40]

Though older and wiser this lord of the realm [00:00:42]

He was loyal to his king Cormac Mac Art[00:00:44]

And to his daughter would give his heart [00:00:46]

Her name was Grainne noble and fair [00:00:48]

But to marry Fionn she would not dare [00:00:51]

A feast was prepared in Tara's great halls [00:00:53]

Marriage banners adorned on the walls [00:00:55]

Grainne sat pale as the feast began[00:00:57]

Then she spied Diarmuid and to him she ran [00:00:59]

My heart is filled with longing for you[00:01:02]

She whispered to Diarmuid he knew not what to do [00:01:04]

Grainne so fair with eyes like the sun [00:01:06]

Please do not tempt me; do not anger Fionn [00:01:08]

She did not listen and she did not care[00:01:10]

She enchanted Diarmuid with her fiery stare [00:01:12]

He was under a geis to do what she pleased [00:01:15]

Though he did not resist or ask for release [00:01:17]

During the night when the Fianna did sleep [00:01:19]

Through Tara's great halls the lovers did creep [00:01:21]

They fled through the night to where they knew not [00:01:23]

Away from Fionn [00:01:25]

They dared not stop [00:01:27]

The cry of hounds they heard in the night [00:01:45]

They ran until they were far from sight [00:01:48]

Days became weeks and still they fled [00:01:50]

If caught by Fionn they would both be dead [00:01:52]

One night as they lay in a forest so dark [00:01:54]

They pledged their love gave each other their heart [00:01:56]

They made love that night on a bed of grass [00:01:58]

Two lovers united never to part [00:02:00]

For a year and a half the chase went on [00:02:03]

Wherever Fionn looked the lovers were gone [00:02:05]

They were aided by Aengus many a time [00:02:07]

He was father of Diarmuid a warrior fine [00:02:09]

Aengus grew tired of this bitter pursuit [00:02:11]

He met Fionn and the king to try end the dispute [00:02:13]

Neither were pleased but they did agree [00:02:16]

They could live in peace they were now free [00:02:18]

Fionn relented and gave them some land [00:02:20]

They lived in peace and all was grand [00:02:22]

Years passed by and the lovers grew old [00:02:25]

They had four sons who grew mighty and bold [00:02:27]

Diarmuid longed to go hunting with Fionn [00:02:29]

Like in the old days when they were young [00:02:31]

One fateful night he opened the door [00:02:33]

There stood Fionn they were friends once more [00:02:35]

There was feasting that night and stories told [00:02:38]

The two merry men remembered the battles of old [00:02:39]

They planned to go hunting at first light [00:02:42]

Though Diarmuid heard cries throughout the night [00:02:44]

The Boar was a beast he would not hunt [00:02:46]

From the wildest swine to the smallest runt [00:02:48]

To kill it would bring his own demise [00:02:51]

This curse he had carried all his life [00:02:53]

When morning came Diarmuid set out [00:03:04]

He remembered those cries and was filled with doubt [00:03:06]

He came upon Fionn at the top of a hill [00:03:08]

There was blood on his hands he looked ready to kill [00:03:10]

A boar is loose it has killed my hound [00:03:13]

Fionn pointed to the beast that lay on the ground [00:03:15]

There then came a crash and the boar attacked [00:03:17]

It struck Diarmuid hard and broke his back [00:03:19]

As he fell down he stabbed the boar [00:03:39]

He killed the beast it was no more [00:03:41]

Fionn help me I'm dying and you have the gift[00:03:43]

Of healing get water I'm starting to drift [00:03:45]

Fionn ran to the stream and cupped his hand [00:03:47]

But the water fell through and soaked into the sand [00:03:49]

He tried again this time with success [00:03:52]

But when he returned Diarmuid was dead [00:03:54]

Grainne fell ill when she heard he was dead [00:03:56]

She cursed Fionn and Fianna oh how her heart bled [00:03:58]

Diarmuid sweet Diarmuid I will always love thee;[00:04:00]

I will never forget the way you loved me [00:04:03]

She lived on her own for some time on her land [00:04:05]

Until Fionn did come to ask for her hand [00:04:07]

This time she agreed Fionn had mended his ways [00:04:09]

They went to Kildare to see out their days[00:04:11]
