The Battle With The Roan - Slim Dusty[00:00:00]
I come ridin' down the Barwon with my saddle and my swag[00:00:05]
Strapped across the bony framework of a long backed chestnut nag[00:00:09]
I was headin' for a station on the stockroute west of Bourke[00:00:15]
To tangle with an outlaw horse well known in campfire talk[00:00:20]
When I rode down to the stockyard where they said I'd find the boss[00:00:26]
Standing just inside I saw the big roan outlaw horse[00:00:31]
He was just the kind of horseflesh a ringer dreams about[00:00:37]
Game eye and good strong shoulders and front legs well spaced out[00:00:42]
I said now boss is that the horse the ringers rave about[00:00:49]
I've heard of him at Camooweal and even further out[00:00:54]
Yes he's been tried by desert men and riders from the gulf[00:01:00]
He said I'd give my station to the man that calls his bluff[00:01:04]
And as I strapped the bridle on that proud and shapely head[00:01:10]
I pictured me as owner of his big merino spread[00:01:15]
I threw my Schneider poley on and tightened up the girth[00:01:21]
And as I stepped astride him the big horse left this earth[00:01:26]
He left the ground in one tight ball as solid as a stone[00:01:32]
And all that I could see around was one big blur of roan[00:01:37]
I hit him with my goosenecks around the shoulder points[00:01:43]
He twisted like a reptile that had a million joints[00:01:47]
He dropped his shoulders way down low and chopped out to the right[00:01:53]
He started striking at the bit each time the spurs did bite[00:01:58]
I thought I felt him weaken so I voiced a victory yell[00:02:04]
What happened then I only know for those who saw it tell[00:02:09]
So I rode way from the station with my saddle and my swag[00:02:16]
Strapped across the bony framework of the same old chestnut nag[00:02:21]
And just as I was leaving he whinnied loud and shrill[00:02:27]
And even after all these years I fancy I hear him still[00:02:32]
They still tell yarns about him around the campfire blaze[00:02:38]
Of the noted riders that he's thrown so many different ways[00:02:43]
And while I'm taking night watch on a cattle camp alone[00:02:49]
I try to figure how I lost the battle with the roan[00:02:53]
