On the Via Dolorosa (Narrative)

We are on the Via Dolorosa the way[00:00:00]

Of the Cross having just left the Praetorium[00:00:02]

Where Pilate said to Christ[00:00:07]

I washed my hands off the matter[00:00:09]

And turned him over to the people[00:00:12]

And told them to do what they would with him[00:00:13]

There's no traffic here the streets's very narrow[00:00:16]

Little children playing along the street[00:00:20]

The street's about ten feet wide[00:00:23]

You see the third station of the Cross[00:00:25]

Where Christ almost fell[00:00:28]

Under the weight of the Cross[00:00:30]

He's kneeling and the fourth station[00:00:32]

Of the Cross over there[00:00:35]

Over forty or fifty feet farther toward Calvary[00:00:37]

Where His mother came up to Him[00:00:40]

And said my Son what's happened[00:00:43]

And she sees Him kneeling[00:00:48]

Under the heavy weight of the Cross too[00:00:49]

Continuing on now toward Calvary[00:00:54]

From the fourth station of the Cross[00:00:56]

We left the Praetorium[00:01:00]

Where Christ was sentenced[00:01:02]

And where he was turned over[00:01:03]

To the Jewish people[00:01:05]

And they were offered Barabbas and they said[00:01:06]

No give us Christ we'll crucify him[00:01:15]

Following along the stations[00:01:20]

Of the Cross passing station No 5[00:01:21]

And they say at this point that Simon[00:01:25]

A Cyrenean coming out of the country[00:01:30]

On him they laid the Cross[00:01:34]

They made him bear it for Jesus[00:01:36]

And they continued on the way[00:01:38]

Of the Cross[00:01:41]

And they continued on the way[00:01:43]

Of the Cross as we are now[00:01:44]

Leaving place No 5 toward Calvary[00:01:47]

It's a long long way from here[00:01:54]

You can see standing here[00:01:58]

Between station No 5 and No 6[00:01:59]

Two hundred yards at least[00:02:04]

Up the steps toward Calvary's hill[00:02:06]

All along it's a very narrow[00:02:09]

Street ten or twelve feet wide[00:02:11]

Shops on each side little children[00:02:13]

Playing old men and women[00:02:15]

Carrying their bread dressed[00:02:18]

In their long robes[00:02:19]

Just as they did two thousand years ago[00:02:20]

The music here in the background[00:02:24]

Is a radio playing[00:02:33]

(is that an Arab station)[00:02:36]

Still continuing up the way[00:02:38]

Of the Cross toward Calvary[00:02:40]

The voices you hear in the background[00:02:42]

Are pilgrims from all over the world[00:02:46]

All along the Via Dolorosa here there are beggars[00:02:50]

(I suppose mostly Arab beggars)[00:02:53]

Passing station No 10 continuing on to Calvary[00:02:58]

They are all along the way[00:03:00]

They say that they are all blind[00:03:02]

They say that the reason[00:03:06]

There are so many blind along[00:03:07]

This part of the country is because of the dust[00:03:09]

Everywhere the wind is blowing[00:03:12]

And the dust is flying[00:03:15]

And of course there are germs[00:03:16]

In the dust that diseases their eyes[00:03:18]

And the dust itself puts them out[00:03:21]

On the way to Calvary[00:03:24]

We pass another beggar sittin' along the way[00:03:26]

All kinds of shops pilgrims continuing[00:03:30]

On the same way we're going[00:03:33]

Now closer to Calvary[00:03:46]

The way really gets crowded[00:03:47]

It's still the same very narrow street though[00:03:51]
