Forever Autumn - Jeff Wayne[00:00:00]
For three days[00:00:09]
I fought my way along roads packed[00:00:10]
With refugees the homeless burdened[00:00:12]
With boxes and bundles containing their[00:00:15]
Valuables All that was of value to me[00:00:17]
Was in London but by the time[00:00:20]
I reached their little red brick house[00:00:22]
Carrie and her father were gone[00:00:24]
The summer sun is fading as the year grows old[00:00:37]
And darker days are drawing near[00:00:45]
The winter winds will be much colder[00:00:53]
Now you're not here[00:01:00]
I watch the birds fly south across the Autumn sky[00:01:09]
And one by one they disappear[00:01:17]
I wish that I was flying with them[00:01:25]
Now you're not here[00:01:31]
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me[00:01:37]
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away[00:01:45]
Through Autumns golden gown we used to kick our way[00:02:07]
You always loved this time of year[00:02:15]
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now[00:02:23]
Cause you're not here[00:02:28]
Cause you're not here[00:02:32]
Cause you're not here[00:02:36]
Fire suddenly leapt[00:02:56]
From house to house the population[00:02:58]
Panicked and ran and I was swept along with them[00:03:00]
Aimless and lost without Carrie[00:03:03]
Finally I headed Eastward for the ocean[00:03:06]
And my only hope of survival a boat out of London[00:03:09]
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me[00:03:15]
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away[00:03:22]
A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes[00:03:44]
As if to hide a lonely tear[00:03:52]
My life will be forever Autumn[00:04:00]
Cause you're not here[00:04:06]
Cause you're not here[00:04:10]
Cause you're not here[00:04:13]
As I hastened through Covent Garden[00:04:24]
Blackfriars and Billingsgate[00:04:26]
More and more people joined the painful exodus[00:04:28]
Sad weary woman[00:04:31]
Their children stumbling and streaked with tears[00:04:33]
Their men bitter and angry[00:04:36]
The rich rubbing shoulder with beggars and outcasts[00:04:38]
Dogs snarled and whined[00:04:42]
The horses bits were covered with foam[00:04:44]
And here and there were wounded soldiers[00:04:47]
As helpless as the rest[00:04:49]
We saw tripods wading up the Thames[00:05:06]
Cutting through bridges as though[00:05:09]
They were paper Waterloo Bridge Westminster Bridge[00:05:10]
One appeared above Big Ben[00:05:14]
Ulla[00:05:18]
Never before in the history[00:05:38]
Of the world had such a mass of[00:05:40]
Human beings moved and suffered together[00:05:41]
This was no disciplined march it was a stampede[00:05:45]
Without order and without a goal[00:05:48]
Six million people unarmed and unprovisioned[00:05:51]
Driving headlong[00:05:54]
It was the beginning of the rout of civilisation[00:05:55]
Of the massacre of mankind[00:06:00]
A vast crown buffeted me toward the already[00:06:25]
Packed steamer[00:06:28]
I looked up enviously at those safely onboard straight[00:06:29]
Into the eyes of my beloved Carrie[00:06:33]
At sight of me she began to fight her way[00:06:36]
Along the packed deck to the gangplank[00:06:38]
At that very moment it was raised[00:06:40]
And I caught a last glimpse of her despairing face[00:06:43]
As the crowd swept me away from her[00:06:47]
Like the sun through the trees you came to love me[00:06:51]
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away[00:06:58]
Through Autumns golden gown we used to kick our way[00:07:20]
You always loved this time of year[00:07:28]
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now[00:07:35]
Cause you're not here[00:07:41]
Cause you're not here[00:07:45]
Cause you're not here[00:07:48]
