Mr. Tanner (Lp Version) - Harry Chapin[00:00:00]
Mr tanner was a cleaner from a town in the Midwest[00:00:10]
And of all the cleaning shops around he'd made his the best[00:00:15]
But he also was a baritone who sang while hanging clothes[00:00:20]
He practiced scales while pressing tails and sang at local shows[00:00:25]
His friends and neighbors praised the voice[00:00:32]
That poured out from his throat[00:00:34]
They said that he should use his gift instead of cleaning coats[00:00:37]
But music was his life it was not his livelihood[00:00:44]
And it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so good[00:00:52]
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his soul[00:00:57]
He did not know how well he sang it just made him whole[00:01:02]
His friends kept working on him to try music out full time[00:01:10]
A big debut and rave reviews a great career to climb[00:01:22]
Finally they got to him he would take the fling[00:01:27]
A concert agent in New York agreed to have him sing[00:01:32]
And there were plane tickets phone calls money spent to rent the hall[00:01:38]
It took most of his savings but he gladly used them all[00:01:43]
But music was his life it was not his livelihood[00:01:51]
And it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so good[00:01:58]
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his soul[00:02:04]
He did not know how well he sang it just made him whole[00:02:08]
The evening came he took the stage his face set in a smile[00:02:15]
And in the half filled hall the critics sat watching on the aisle[00:02:27]
But the concert was a blur to him spatters of applause[00:02:33]
He did not know how well he sang he only heard the flaws[00:02:38]
But the critics were concise it only took four lines[00:02:43]
But no one could accuse them of being over kind[00:02:50]
Mr Martin Tanner baritone of Dayton Ohio[00:02:57]
Made his town hall debut last night[00:03:01]
Be came well prepared but unfortunately his presentation[00:03:04]
Was not up to contemporary professional standards[00:03:08]
His voice lacks the range of tonal color[00:03:11]
Necessary to make it consistently interesting[00:03:14]
Full time consideration of another endeavor might be in order[00:03:18]
He came home to Dayton and was questioned by his friends[00:03:36]
Then he smiled and just said nothing and he never sang again[00:03:41]
Excepting very late at night when the shop was dark and closed[00:03:51]
He sang softly to himself as he sorted through the clothes[00:03:58]
Music was his life it was not his livelihood[00:04:11]
And it made him feel so happy it made him feel so good[00:04:24]
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his soul[00:04:35]
And he did not know how well he sang it just made him whole[00:04:44]
