Kilkelly - An Cat Dubh[00:00:00]
Written by:Peter Jones[00:00:00]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and sixty[00:00:14]
My dear and loving son John[00:00:17]
Your good friend schoolmaster[00:00:20]
Pat mcnamara's so good as[00:00:22]
To write these words down[00:00:25]
Your brothers have all gone to find work in England[00:00:27]
The house is so empty and sad[00:00:31]
The crop of potatoes is sorely infected[00:00:34]
A third to a half of them bad[00:00:37]
And your sister Brigid and Patrick o'donnell[00:00:41]
Are going to be married in june[00:00:44]
Your mother says not to work on the railroad[00:00:48]
Be sure to come home soon[00:00:52]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and seventy[00:01:02]
My dear and loving son John[00:01:05]
Hello to your missus and to your four children[00:01:09]
May they grow healthy and strong[00:01:12]
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble[00:01:16]
I suppose that he never will learn[00:01:19]
The house of the dampness there's no turf to talk of[00:01:22]
And we have nothing to burn[00:01:26]
And Brigid is happy he named the child for her[00:01:29]
And knows she's got six of her own[00:01:33]
She says he found work but you don't say what[00:01:36]
Kind[00:01:39]
When will you be coming home[00:01:40]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and eighty[00:01:50]
Dear Michael and John my sons[00:01:53]
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news[00:01:57]
That your dear our mother has gone[00:02:00]
We buried her down at the church in kilkelly[00:02:04]
Your brothers and brigid were there[00:02:07]
You don't have to worry she died very quickly[00:02:11]
Remember her in your prayers[00:02:14]
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning[00:02:17]
With money he's sure to buy land[00:02:21]
For the crop has been poor[00:02:24]
And the people are selling[00:02:26]
Any price they can[00:02:28]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and ninety[00:03:13]
My dear and loving son John[00:03:16]
I suppose that I must be close on eighty[00:03:20]
It's thirty years since you've gone[00:03:23]
Because of the money that you sent me[00:03:26]
I'm still living out on my own[00:03:30]
Michael has build himself a fine house[00:03:34]
And Brigid's daughters have grown[00:03:37]
And thank you for sending your family picture[00:03:40]
They're lovely young woman and men[00:03:43]
Oh why that you think about[00:03:47]
Comin' to visit[00:03:49]
And like to see you again[00:03:50]
Kilkelly Ireland eighteen and ninety[00:04:01]
To my dear brother John[00:04:04]
I'm sorry I didn't write sooner to tell you[00:04:07]
That father has gone[00:04:12]
He was living with brigid she says he was cheerful[00:04:14]
And healthy right down to the end[00:04:17]
Ah you should have seen him[00:04:21]
Playing with her grandchildren[00:04:22]
Of Pat my grandmother old friend[00:04:24]
We buried him all along side of mother[00:04:28]
Down at kilkelly churchyard[00:04:31]
He was a just comin' and feisty old man[00:04:34]
Considering his life was so hard[00:04:38]
And it's funny the way he kept talking about you[00:04:41]
He called for you at the end[00:04:45]
Oh why don't you think about coming to visit[00:04:48]
With all love to see you again[00:04:51]
