You Have to Be So Much Better than You Ever Thought - Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)[00:00:00]
I spent one week every summer at camp Tampico[00:00:02]
For every year I was a boy scout[00:00:13]
The camp felt like an entire separate country[00:00:27]
Or as if the rest of the world had disappeared[00:00:36]
And we were the only ones left alive[00:00:44]
We traveled in packs[00:00:57]
We rode our bikes everywhere[00:01:03]
About ten or fifteen feet before we reached any destination[00:01:10]
I would yell dismount and we would[00:01:21]
Swing our bodies over the frame in unison onto the left pedal[00:01:29]
And coast to a halt[00:01:48]
I felt like a grown up[00:01:52]
Or how I imagined one must feel[00:01:59]
And I could mostly come and go as I pleased[00:02:06]
One summer sirens blared out over the camp p a[00:02:16]
In a shrill and ugly tone with an infinite refrain[00:02:30]
That carried for miles and miles[00:02:43]
I had never heard that sound before[00:02:57]
Our counselors were panicked and told us[00:03:03]
To return to our campsites immediately[00:03:07]
My friend Nate and I mounted our bikes and sprinted home[00:03:14]
As branches fell all around us[00:03:19]
It felt like we were the leads in a video game[00:03:25]
And we were too caught up in it to understand we were in any real danger[00:03:38]
When we got back everyone was huddled under the mess tent[00:03:51]
Except for Nate's brother and his friend[00:04:00]
Who were stuck in a rowboat in the middle of Grass Lake[00:04:05]
During the full brunt of the storm[00:04:13]
The adults had to hold Nate back from going out after him[00:04:18]
As the pair raced across the water like a glacier or a hawk[00:04:27]
We watched from the shore and didn't feel the pouring rain[00:04:40]
Until long after they safely pulled in[00:04:47]
