The Ugly One With The Jewels (Live) - Laurie Anderson[00:00:00]
In 1974 I went to Mexico to visit my brother who[00:00:11]
Was working as an anthropologist with Tsutsil Indians [00:00:17]
The last surviving Mayan tribe [00:00:21]
And the Tsutsil speak a lovely birdlike language[00:00:26]
And are quite tiny physically;[00:00:31]
I towered over them [00:00:33]
Mostly I spent my days following the women around[00:00:36]
Since my brother wasn't really allowed to do this [00:00:41]
We got up at 3am and began to[00:00:45]
Separate the corn into three colors [00:00:48]
And we boiled it ran to the mill and back [00:00:52]
And finally started to make the tortillas [00:00:55]
Now all the other women's tortillas were 360 [00:00:59]
Perfectly toasted perfectly round;[00:01:04]
And after a lot of[00:01:08]
Practice mine were still lobe-sided and charred [00:01:09]
And when they thought I wasn't looking[00:01:16]
They threw them to the dogs [00:01:20]
After breakfast we spent the rest of the day down[00:01:24]
At the river watching the goats and braiding[00:01:27]
And unbraiding each other's hair [00:01:31]
So usually there wasn't that much to report [00:01:34]
One day the women decided to braid[00:01:38]
My hair Tsutsil-style [00:01:41]
After they did this I saw my reflection in a puddle [00:01:44]
I looked ridiculous but they said [00:01:50]
“Before we did this you were ugly but now[00:01:55]
Maybe you will find a husband ”[00:02:02]
I lived within in a yurt a thatched structure[00:02:10]
Shaped like a cob cake [00:02:15]
And there's a central fireplace ringed by sleeping[00:02:17]
Shelves sort of like a dry beaver down [00:02:21]
Now my Tsutsil name was Lausha [00:02:27]
Which loosely translated means[00:02:31]
The ugly one with the jewels[00:02:34]
Now ugly OK I was awfully tall by local standards [00:02:39]
But what did they mean by the jewels [00:02:46]
I didn't find out what this meant until one night [00:02:53]
When I was taking my contact lenses out [00:02:57]
And since I'd lost the case I was carefully[00:03:00]
Placing them on the sleeping shelf;[00:03:03]
Suddenly I noticed that everyone was staring at me[00:03:07]
And I realized that none of the[00:03:12]
Tsutsil had ever seen glasses [00:03:14]
Much less contacts and that these were[00:03:16]
The jewels the transparent [00:03:20]
Perfectly round jewels that[00:03:25]
I carefully hid on the shelf[00:03:29]
At night and then put for safekeeping[00:03:31]
Into my eyes every morning [00:03:36]
So I may have been ugly but so what [00:03:42]
I had the jewels [00:03:52]
Full fathom thy father lies[00:04:06]
Of his bones are coral made[00:04:13]
Those are pearls that were his eyes[00:04:20]
Nothing of him that doth fade[00:04:27]
But that suffers a sea change[00:04:33]
Into something rich and strange[00:04:41]
And I alone am left to tell the tale[00:04:49]
Call me Ishmael[00:04:57]
