Lawless - Christy Moore[00:00:00]
Written by:Mick Curry[00:00:01]
He was Lawless by name[00:00:11]
Lawless by nature[00:00:13]
He was trouble right from the start[00:00:15]
Hard as nails[00:00:19]
Runnin' wild through the streets[00:00:20]
He was breakin' his poor mother's heart[00:00:22]
Nature played a trick on lawless[00:00:26]
And the humour of nature is cruel[00:00:29]
He grew up as we all had expected[00:00:34]
Into a dangerous fool[00:00:37]
He was a hard man a man for all seasons[00:00:42]
He was always out for a fight[00:00:45]
He couldn't hold drink but still he'd get plastered[00:00:49]
In clark's every Saturday night[00:00:52]
Strip to the vest and challenge the best[00:00:56]
Until the guards they were called to come fast[00:01:00]
And they'd lock him away for the rest of the day[00:01:03]
And let him out on the Sunday for mass[00:01:07]
Oh one night he went down[00:01:13]
To the ring's end regatta[00:01:14]
Where he met up with the[00:01:16]
Bold[00:01:17]
Dolly[00:01:18]
Platts[00:01:18]
She wasn't exactly what you'd call beauty[00:01:22]
But she was the belle of our flats[00:01:25]
A whirlwind romance and Dolly took a[00:01:29]
Flier[00:01:32]
With lawless she would settle down[00:01:32]
It was pure coincidence three months before[00:01:36]
There was a yankee destroyer in town[00:01:39]
And the couple were blessed with one of god's miracles[00:01:45]
Before six months had elapsed[00:01:48]
Dolly gave birth to a nine pound black baby[00:01:52]
And lawless was fit to collapse[00:01:56]
She swore she'd never been touched by another[00:01:59]
And lawless took her at her word[00:02:02]
And the neighbours exclaimed 'he's the spit of his[00:02:06]
Father and the cuckoo is a wonderful bird'[00:02:09]
Oh now lawless stays in and looks after the family[00:02:26]
While Dolly goes out for the night[00:02:30]
The old gossips all say she's free in her ways[00:02:35]
And their evil rumours ran rife[00:02:39]
When lawless heard this he waited for Dolly[00:02:42]
In the bridge where the river runs low[00:02:46]
Noone will ever know what happened next[00:02:50]
But Dolly drowned in the dodder[00:02:53]
Below[00:02:55]
Some say he's crazy and more say he's evil[00:02:59]
Everyone says that he's mad[00:03:02]
Noone will defend him he was no angel[00:03:08]
But I'll tell you he wasn't all bad[00:03:11]
They've locked him away for the rest of his natural[00:03:17]
Never again will he see[00:03:20]
Down the back of ring's end[00:03:26]
There's a lonely child playing[00:03:27]
Where the liffey flows into the sea[00:03:29]
