Sam's Sturgeon - Stanley Holloway[00:00:02]
Sam Small were fishing in canal[00:00:05]
Twixt Manchester and Sale[00:00:08]
He hadn't had a bite all day[00:00:10]
And nought to sup but ale[00:00:12]
Then all at once his fishing line[00:00:14]
Went rushing out like mad[00:00:16]
By gum cried Sam I've got a bite[00:00:18]
So by gum he'ad[00:00:22]
He tugged and tugged and better tugged[00:00:24]
His line it rose and sank[00:00:26]
Then fish gave one last dying gasp[00:00:29]
And dropped stone dead on t'bank[00:00:32]
Then a policeman bustled up[00:00:36]
On feet both large and flat[00:00:37]
He looked at Sam he looked at fish[00:00:40]
And saidEe who done that[00:00:43]
It's just a sort of fish said Sam[00:00:47]
I'm taking home to tea[00:00:49]
Tha's not said policeman That tha's not[00:00:51]
It don't belong to thee[00:00:54]
It's what they call a Sturgeon Sam[00:00:56]
That fish belongs to King[00:01:00]
So take it up the Palace lad[00:01:02]
As fast as anything[00:01:04]
Sam stooped and picked the Sturgeon up[00:01:06]
Well knowing who was boss[00:01:08]
And ran to station where he bought[00:01:11]
Two tickets for King's Cross[00:01:13]
When Sam reached London Town[00:01:16]
The crowd all raised a cheering cry[00:01:18]
The traffic parted left and right[00:01:22]
To let that Sturgeon by[00:01:24]
The Palace sentry haughty like[00:01:26]
Said What might be your wish[00:01:29]
But when he saw what Sam had brought[00:01:32]
He cried Pass Royal fish[00:01:34]
Sam knocked at door and servant girl[00:01:39]
Said Step inside the hall[00:01:41]
The King and Queen is out says she[00:01:44]
But not for thee Sam Small[00:01:47]
And so with Sturgeon in his arms[00:01:49]
Sam tramped up corridor[00:01:52]
He trailed along some passages[00:01:54]
And knocked at parlour door[00:01:57]
Come in says King So Sam went in[00:01:59]
With Royal fish and all[00:02:03]
Why dash me buttons cries the King[00:02:05]
If it isn't old Sam Small[00:02:09]
That's me said Sam and ere's a fish[00:02:11]
Our policeman said were thine[00:02:14]
A Sturgeon caught in Ship Canal[00:02:16]
With rod and hook and line[00:02:19]
Well well said King come sit thee down[00:02:21]
That must be fair done up[00:02:25]
We just were going to have us teas[00:02:28]
That'll stay and have a cup[00:02:30]
Thanks King said Sam and takes a seat[00:02:32]
With fish upon his knee[00:02:35]
Nay put that thing on sofa Sam[00:02:37]
Says King And have thy tea[00:02:41]
Now what about this fish asks Sam[00:02:43]
But King he whispers low[00:02:46]
I'm going to tell thee something Sam[00:02:49]
But don't let policeman know[00:02:52]
I hate to show ingratitude[00:02:55]
And please don't think me mean[00:02:57]
But I never did like Sturgeon Sam[00:02:59]
Nor come to that does Queen[00:03:02]
To eat the stuff we hate so much[00:03:05]
Well Sam we find it hard[00:03:08]
So we hand em to the Chamberlain[00:03:10]
Who stacks them in back yard[00:03:13]
Just thee look out that window Sam[00:03:15]
And see where t'Sturgeons go[00:03:17]
Sam looked at yard and saw e'm all[00:03:20]
In thousands in a row[00:03:23]
It's champion seeing thee again[00:03:26]
But Sam twixt me and thee[00:03:29]
I can't stand Sturgeons[00:03:32]
But I love a kipper to me tea[00:03:34]
Now fancy that says Sam by gum[00:03:38]
Why them's my favourite fish[00:03:41]
And then the Queen came smiling in[00:03:44]
With kippers on the dish[00:03:47]
Do you know Sam Small my dear says King[00:03:49]
Queen says 'Why yes yes yes[00:03:52]
Just touch the bell and tell our James[00:03:56]
To bring more watercress[00:04:00]
Think on says King when tea were done[00:04:02]
And Sam got up to go[00:04:06]
Kippers is what I like for tea[00:04:08]
But don't let policeman know[00:04:10]
So Sam went home to Lancashire[00:04:14]
And said a silent prayer[00:04:16]
With blessings on the kippered fish[00:04:19]
Long live the Royal Pair[00:04:22]
