Queen Anne Front (Live) - Pete Seeger[00:00:02]
When great grandfather was a gay young man[00:00:43]
And great grandmother was his bride[00:00:46]
They found a lot, a jolly little spot[00:00:49]
Over on the old North Side[00:00:52]
It sloped down toward the river[00:00:55]
From River Avenue[00:00:57]
Great grandma said that it would give her[00:01:01]
Such a lovely view[00:01:03]
So they took a look in Godey's Ladies book[00:01:07]
To see what they could find[00:01:09]
And they found a house, a jolly little house[00:01:12]
With a Queen Anne front and a Mary Anne behind[00:01:14]
Now great grandfather was a handy man[00:01:21]
Who never wasted any time[00:01:23]
He found a crew that knew just what to do[00:01:27]
With white pine, common brick and lime[00:01:29]
He said, "I'll build a big veranda[00:01:35]
Where Amanda can perch[00:01:37]
And I'll sit there myself on Sunday mornings[00:01:40]
When everybody else has gone to church"[00:01:43]
The neighbors said, "He's crazy in the head[00:01:45]
He's surely lost his mind[00:01:48]
But he built that house, that jolly little house[00:01:50]
With a Queen Anne front and a Mary Anne behind"[00:01:53]
Now great grandpa at last was laid to rest[00:01:58]
With great grandmother at his side[00:02:01]
Old Aunt Amanda said, "My land[00:02:05]
An empty house I can't abide"[00:02:07]
"I'll start a ladies' seminary[00:02:09]
It will be very select[00:02:12]
Of course, it will be very necessary[00:02:15]
That all my girls be circumspect"[00:02:17]
As you may guess it was a big success[00:02:20]
Those girls were so refined[00:02:23]
In that self-same house, that jolly little house[00:02:25]
With a Queen Anne front and a Mary Anne behind[00:02:28]
Now aunt Amanda's work at last was done[00:02:35]
And she passed on to her reward[00:02:37]
Appeared a sign that bore the line[00:02:41]
Announcing simply, 'Room and Board'[00:02:43]
The house was soon filled[00:02:46]
With roomers of every degree[00:02:48]
Red flannel underwear and bloomers[00:02:52]
Hung out for everyone to see[00:02:54]
The old porch stoop had started in to droop[00:02:57]
The house looked so resigned[00:03:00]
That self-same house, that jolly little house[00:03:03]
With a Queen Anne front and a Mary Anne behind[00:03:06]
Now that old house was looking worse and worse[00:03:24]
And so was River Avenue[00:03:31]
Wooden shacks across the tracks[00:03:34]
Spoiled great grandma's lovely view[00:03:36]
A group of very pretty ladies moved in there one day[00:03:40]
They were such pretty Sues and Sadie's[00:03:45]
But a wagon came and took them all away[00:03:48]
Said one old dame, "Now isn't it a shame[00:03:51]
My girls were so refined[00:03:54]
But they closed that house, that jolly little house[00:03:56]
With a Queen Anne front and a Mary Anne behind"[00:03:59]
