A Boy Named Sue - Flatt & Scruggs[00:00:00]
Well my daddy left home when I was three[00:00:08]
And he didn't leave much for Ma and me[00:00:10]
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze[00:00:13]
Now I don't blame him because he run and hid[00:00:18]
But the meanest thing that he ever did[00:00:20]
Was before he left he went and named me Sue[00:00:22]
Well he must have thought it was quite a joke[00:00:27]
And it got lots of laughs from a lot of folks[00:00:30]
It seems I had to fight my whole life through[00:00:32]
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red[00:00:37]
Some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head[00:00:39]
I tell you life ain't easy for a boy named Sue[00:00:42]
Well I grew up quick and I grew up mean[00:00:47]
My fist got hard and my wits got keen[00:00:49]
I roamed from town to town to hide my shame[00:00:51]
Well I made my vows to the moon and stars[00:00:56]
I'd search the honky tonks and the bars[00:00:59]
And kill that man that gave me that awful name[00:01:01]
Well it was Gatlinsburg in mid July[00:01:06]
And I just hit town and my throat was dry[00:01:08]
I'd thought I'd stop and have myself a brew[00:01:11]
At an old saloon on a street of mud[00:01:15]
There at a table dealing stud[00:01:18]
Sat that dirty mangy dog that named me Sue[00:01:21]
Well I knew that sneak was my own sweet dad[00:01:25]
From a wornout picture that my mother had[00:01:28]
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye[00:01:30]
He was big and bent and gray and old[00:01:35]
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold[00:01:38]
And I said my name is Sue how do you do[00:01:40]
Now you're gonna die yeah that's what I told him[00:01:45]
Well I hit him hard right between the eyes[00:01:51]
And he went down but to my surprice[00:01:53]
He came up with a knife[00:01:56]
And cut off a piece of my ear[00:01:57]
Well I busted a chair right across his teeth[00:02:00]
And we crashed through the wall and into the street[00:02:03]
Kickin' and a gougin' in the mud[00:02:05]
And the blood and the beer[00:02:07]
I tell you I've fought tougher men[00:02:10]
But I really can't remember when[00:02:12]
He kicked like a mule[00:02:15]
And bit like a crocodile[00:02:16]
I heard him laug and I heard him cuss[00:02:21]
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first[00:02:24]
He stood there looking at me and I saw him smile[00:02:26]
And he said son this world is rough[00:02:31]
And if a man's gonna make it he's gotta be tough[00:02:33]
And I know I wouldn't be there to help you along[00:02:36]
So I gave you that name and I said goodbye[00:02:41]
I knew you'd have to get tough or die[00:02:43]
And it's that name that helped to make you strong[00:02:45]
He said you fought one heck of a fight[00:02:51]
And I know you hate me and you've got the right[00:02:53]
To kill me now I wouldn't blame you if you do[00:02:55]
But you oughta thank me before I die[00:03:02]
For the gravel in your guts[00:03:04]
And the spit in your eye[00:03:05]
For I'm the son of a bitch that named you Sue[00:03:06]
Lester what the hell that you say[00:03:10]
Yeah what could I do[00:03:16]
I got all choked up and I threw down the gun[00:03:21]
Called him a Pa and he called me son[00:03:23]
And I come away with a different point of view[00:03:25]
And I think about him now and then[00:03:30]
Every time I try and every time I win[00:03:33]
And if I ever have a son I think I'll name him[00:03:35]
Well I ain't gonna name him Sue[00:03:39]
I'm gonna call him Johnny Cash[00:03:42]
