Singin’ In Viet Nam Talkin’ Blues

Singin's In Viet Nam Talkin' Blues - Jphnny Cash[00:00:02]

One mornin' at breakfast I said to my wife [00:00:08]

We been everywhere once and some places twice [00:00:11]

As I had another helping of country ham [00:00:14]

She said "We ain't never been to Vietnam [00:00:16]

"And there's a bunch of our boys over there "[00:00:19]

So we went to the Orient: Saigon [00:00:22]

Well we got a big welcome when we drove in [00:00:27]

Through the gates of a place that they call Long Vinh [00:00:29]

We checked in and everything got kinda quiet [00:00:32]

But a soldier boy said: "Just wait 'til tonight [00:00:34]

"Things get noisy Things start happenin' [00:00:37]

"Big bad firecrackers "[00:00:42]

Well that night we did about four shows for the boys [00:00:45]

And they were livin' it up with a whole lot of noise [00:00:48]

We did our last song for the night [00:00:51]

And we crawled into bed for some peace and quiet [00:00:53]

But things weren't peaceful And things weren't quiet [00:00:56]

Things were scary [00:01:00]

Well for a few minutes June never said one word [00:01:03]

And I thought at first that she hadn't heard [00:01:07]

Then a shell exploded not two miles away [00:01:09]

She sat up in bed and I heard her say: "What was that "[00:01:11]

I said: "That was a shell or a bomb "[00:01:15]

She said: "I'm scared " I said "Me too "[00:01:18]

Well all night long that noise kept on [00:01:21]

And the sound would chill you right to the bone [00:01:24]

The bullets and the bombs and the mortar shells [00:01:27]

Shook our bed every time one fell [00:01:30]

And it never let up; it was gonna get worse [00:01:32]

Before it got any better [00:01:36]

Well when the sun came up the noise died down [00:01:39]

We got a few minutes sleep an' we were sleepin' sound [00:01:43]

When a soldier knocked on our door and said:[00:01:45]

"Last night they brought in seven dead and 14 wounded "[00:01:48]

And would we come down to the base hospital and see the boys [00:01:52]

"Yes "[00:01:56]

So we went to the hospital ward by day [00:01:58]

And every night we were singin' away [00:02:01]

Then the shells and the bombs was goin' again [00:02:03]

And the helicopters brought in the wounded men [00:02:06]

Night after night; day after day [00:02:09]

Comin' and a goin' [00:02:13]

So we sadly sang for them our last song [00:02:16]

And reluctantly we said: "So long "[00:02:19]

We did our best to let 'em know that we care [00:02:20]

For every last one of 'em that's over there [00:02:24]

Whether we belong over there or not [00:02:27]

Somebody over here love's 'em and needs 'em[00:02:29]

Well now that's about all that there is to tell [00:02:34]

About that little trip into livin' hell [00:02:37]

And if I ever go back over there any more [00:02:39]

I hope there's none of our boys there for me to sing for;[00:02:42]

I hope that war is over with [00:02:45]

And they all come back home [00:02:47]

To stay [00:02:49]

In peace[00:02:50]
