Estelle(Album Version)

Estelle - Dan Bern[00:00:00]

I was painting a still life this morning[00:00:28]

Of a throat lozenge sitting[00:00:31]

On a copy of Tropic of Cancer[00:00:32]

The only thing weird[00:00:34]

About it is that a year ago[00:00:35]

I never thought I'd paint anything again[00:00:37]

I decided I wasn't ever gonna paint again[00:00:39]

It didn't bother me too much Warhol's dead[00:00:42]

David Hockney's still alive [00:00:45]

I don't need to paint[00:00:47]

I painted over ten thousand paintings[00:00:50]

Sad ones funny ones [00:00:53]

Dark ones and light ones[00:00:55]

I've done haystacks and[00:00:56]

Rich old ladies by their pools[00:00:58]

Wearing nothing but a scarf[00:00:59]

I've painted everything there was to paint[00:01:02]

Now it was time to sit back give interviews[00:01:04]

Get on the internet hang out at club med[00:01:07]

Take stock of what I've done[00:01:10]

You know the best friend I ever had was a dog[00:01:13]

It sounds like a cliche[00:01:16]

Unless it's happened to you[00:01:17]

Some days that dog was the[00:01:19]

Only reason I even got out of bed[00:01:20]

That dog went everywhere with me[00:01:24]

And then I heard the crack addicts[00:01:26]

Were stealin' dogs and[00:01:28]

Selling them for animal research[00:01:29]

It sounded like an urban myth to[00:01:30]

Me like the mouse in the Coke bottle[00:01:32]

But I started leavin' her at home after that[00:01:33]

You know Paula was my wife for a while[00:01:36]

She ran off to Paris with[00:01:39]

The great grandson of Van Gogh[00:01:40]

A cartoonist who did[00:01:42]

Fashion graphics for Le Monde[00:01:43]

When Paula left she took[00:01:47]

My dog I never saw her again[00:01:48]

Except in the court during the custody battle[00:01:51]

She won and got to keep the dog[00:01:53]

And I didn't speak to anyone for months[00:01:55]

You know sometimes it feels[00:01:58]

Like there's so much that you need[00:02:01]

Sometimes the world is upside down[00:02:04]

Sometimes it seems like the only thing you need[00:02:10]

Is holdin' someone's[00:02:15]

Hand as you walk through town[00:02:17]

I started hanging around with Dino[00:02:29]

He used to run a poker game back east[00:02:31]

Now he has a little coffee shop [00:02:33]

Sells cappuccino to his old pals[00:02:35]

Tommy Chicago and Jimmy the Wig and Ugly Rose[00:02:37]

You know the best person I ever knew[00:02:40]

Was a Mormon woman named Estelle[00:02:42]

She still calls me drunk every few months[00:02:44]

And asks me stuff I don't want to talk about[00:02:46]

You can't talk to her long[00:02:49]

Unless you're drunk yourself[00:02:50]

Then we go all night[00:02:51]

Yeah she goes "Why baby [00:03:02]

Why baby why baby why[00:03:04]

Have you turned your back on love [00:03:06]

You had so many chances[00:03:08]

Why have you let 'em all go by "[00:03:09]

Well one morning I was sitting[00:03:14]

Out in front of Dino's place[00:03:15]

With Jake the Shears a guy[00:03:17]

From Philly who gives free mohawks[00:03:18]

There were a couple of young[00:03:20]

Painters I was hopin' to come by[00:03:21]

So I could give 'em some advice[00:03:22]

Yeah I was sittin' there updating my list of enemies[00:03:25]

When this girl walks in[00:03:28]

And the universe kind of stops[00:03:29]

Turned out she drank the same tea as me[00:03:31]

Don't take more than that[00:03:33]

To start a conversation sometimes[00:03:34]

She believed collage was[00:03:36]

The greatest of all the arts[00:03:37]

And was busy pasting pictures[00:03:39]

Of horses next to ads for laundry soap[00:03:40]

Next to Mohammed Ali [00:03:43]

She had a turquoise in her ear[00:03:44]

And said Rachmaninoff[00:03:46]

Was always in her head[00:03:46]

But later that day I was trying[00:03:48]

To describe her to Jimmy the Wig[00:03:50]

I couldn't find any words and[00:03:52]

I realized I'd started to sketch her chin[00:03:54]

Somehow it didn't look right [00:03:58]

I scratched it out and tried it again[00:04:00]

I filled an entire pad I threw[00:04:03]

It away I never even came close[00:04:06]

For a six days I sat at Dino's place[00:04:09]

The rain wouldn't quit[00:04:12]

And no one came in[00:04:14]

Finally on the seventh day[00:04:15]

It cleared and in she walked[00:04:17]

I asked her to sit with me[00:04:20]

And I bought her a cup of tea[00:04:22]

And I asked her to[00:04:24]

Model for me sometime[00:04:25]

That afternoon I was at a canvas[00:04:26]

She was wearing a yellow dress[00:04:28]

I swore if she let me I'd get it right[00:04:30]

I've painted over ten thousand paintings[00:04:32]

Sad ones funny ones [00:04:35]

Dark ones and light ones[00:04:36]

But sitting there it was like[00:04:38]

I couldn't even write my own name[00:04:39]

I apologized and said "It's been a few months[00:04:43]

If you have patience [00:04:45]

I'll get the hang of it again"[00:04:47]

In the next few weeks [00:04:48]

I painted her hundreds of times[00:04:50]

If I get the nose right the chin's too long[00:04:54]

If I get 'em both right the face is too thin[00:04:57]

But I keep after it and[00:05:00]

One day I I'll get it all right[00:05:01]

I painted a still life[00:05:28]

This morning of a throat lozenge[00:05:29]

Sitting on a copy of Tropic of Cancer[00:05:31]

The only thing was funny is that[00:05:33]

I never thought I'd paint anything again[00:05:35]

I think I might go visit Estelle[00:05:39]

Those Utah mountains are good for the soul[00:05:41]

I'll bring my brushes and some Jack Daniels[00:05:44]

And we can make up for lost time[00:05:46]

And she said "Why baby [00:05:49]

Why baby why baby why [00:05:51]

Baby why have you turned your back on love[00:05:53]

You had so many chances[00:05:55]

Why have you let 'em all go by "[00:05:56]

And she says "Why baby [00:06:00]

Why baby why baby why [00:06:02]

Baby why have you turned your back on love[00:06:03]

You had so many chances[00:06:06]

Why have you let 'em all go by "[00:06:07]

Sometimes it seems like[00:06:11]

There's so much that you need[00:06:15]

Sometimes the world is upside down[00:06:17]

Sometimes it seems[00:06:23]

Like the only thing you need[00:06:26]

Is holdin' someone's hand[00:06:29]

As you walk through town[00:06:31]
