Johnson County War

Johnson County War - Chris Ledoux[00:00:00]

Headed for Wyoming in 1882 a woman a team and a wagon[00:01:21]

Gonna make our dreams come true[00:01:26]

Settled in the foothills of the big horn mountain slope[00:01:29]

Life is sweet we lived on the meat of the deer and the antelope[00:01:34]

We cut house logs on the moutain with the team we hauled 'em down[00:01:39]

Peeled 'em and we stacked 'em up for a house and bought some ground[00:01:43]

Traded for some cattle and turned 'em out on the range[00:01:48]

The skies were blue and we never knew how things were gonna change[00:01:52]

Ole powder river you're muddy and wide how many men have died upon[00:01:58]

Your shores[00:02:04]

When you brand a man a rustler he's gotta take a side[00:02:07]

There's no middle ground in this Johnson country war[00:02:12]

Well the neighbors stopped by yesterday while I was outside choppin'[00:02:19]

Some wood[00:02:22]

And they filled me in on the local news ain't none of it sounded good[00:02:23]

Said they'd been some cattle stealin' by some no count outlaw bands[00:02:27]

We'd all been branded rustler's by the big ranchers of this land[00:02:32]

Well it was us against the cattlemen and the years just made it worse[00:02:37]

First the drought then the tough winter Johnson county had been dealt[00:02:42]

A curse[00:02:45]

Then their came the story about the two dry golgia tax[00:02:47]

Ranger Jones and John Tisdale both been shot in the back[00:02:51]

Oh powder river you're muddy and you're wide[00:02:57]

How many men have died upon your shores[00:03:01]

When you brand a man a rustler he's gotta take a side[00:03:06]

There's no middle ground in this Johnson county war[00:03:11]

Then last night at supper time riders stopped by chance[00:03:18]

They said cattleman and hired guns just burned the Kaycee Ranch[00:03:22]

Two men had died this mornin' shot down in the snow[00:03:27]

Now the vigilante army was marchin' for buffalo[00:03:31]

Well the county was in an uproar an every man saddled up to ride[00:03:37]

Caught the cattlemen at the TA Ranch and surrounded all four sides[00:03:41]

We hailed the house with bullets and swore we'd make 'em pay[00:03:46]

But the calvery came across the plains and once again saved the day[00:03:50]

Well they marched 'em off to Cheyenne and no one went to jail[00:03:58]

The cattlemen we're all turned loose and the hired guns hit the trail[00:04:03]

And I guess the only justice wasn't much to say the least[00:04:07]

Last winter me and mine ate mighty fine on the cattle baron's beef[00:04:11]

Oh powder river you're muddy and you're wide[00:04:18]

How many men have died upon your shores[00:04:22]

When you brand a man a rustler he's gotta take a side[00:04:26]

There's no middle ground in this Johnson county war[00:04:32]

There's no middle ground in this Johnson county war[00:04:36]
