Red Wine - Woody Guthrie[00:00:00]
Written by:Woody Guthrie[00:00:01]
Oh pour me a drink of Italian red wine[00:00:03]
And let me taste it and call back to mind[00:00:06]
Once more in my thoughts and once more in my soul[00:00:10]
This story as great if not greater than all[00:00:15]
The AP news on June 24th[00:00:21]
Told about a patrolman named Earl J Vaugh[00:00:24]
He stepped on a Main Street trolley car[00:00:28]
And arrested Sacco and Vanzetti there[00:00:31]
The article tells how Earl J Vaugh[00:00:36]
Is now retiring as an officer of law[00:00:39]
This cop goes down in my history[00:00:43]
For arresting Sacco and Vanzetti that day[00:00:46]
It was 1920 the 5th of May[00:00:51]
The cop and some buddies took these men away[00:00:54]
Off of the car and out and down[00:00:59]
And down to the jail in Brockton town[00:01:03]
There's been a killing and a robbery[00:01:08]
At the Slater Morrill shoe factory[00:01:11]
You two gents are carryin' guns[00:01:14]
And you dodged the draft when the war did come[00:01:17]
Yes 'tis so 'tis so 'tis so[00:01:22]
We made for the borders of Mexico[00:01:25]
The rich man's war we could not fight[00:01:29]
So we crossed the border to keep out of sight[00:01:32]
You men are known as radical sons[00:01:37]
You must be killers you both carry guns[00:01:40]
I'm a night watchman my friend peddles fish[00:01:44]
And he carries his gun when he's got lots of cash[00:01:47]
Oh pour me a glass of Germany's beer[00:01:52]
Russia's hot vodka so strong and clear[00:01:55]
Pour me a glass of Palestine's Hock[00:01:59]
Or just a moonshiner's bucket of chock[00:02:02]
Now let me think and let me see[00:02:06]
How these two men were found guilty[00:02:10]
How a hundred and sixty witnesses passed by[00:02:14]
And the ones spoke for them was a hundred and five[00:02:19]
Out of the rest about fifty just guessed[00:02:24]
Out of the five that was put to the test[00:02:27]
Only the story of one held true[00:02:30]
After a hundred and fifty nine got through[00:02:33]
And on this one uncertain and afraid[00:02:38]
She saw the carload of robbers she said[00:02:41]
One year later she remembered his face[00:02:45]
After seein' his car for a second and a half[00:02:48]
She told of his hand an' his gun an' his ears[00:02:53]
She told of his shirt an' the cut of his hair[00:02:56]
Remembered his eyes an' his lips an' his cheeks[00:02:59]
And Eva Splaine's tale sent these men to the chair[00:03:02]
I was right there in Boston the night that they died[00:03:07]
I never did see such sight in my life[00:03:10]
I thought the crowds would pull down the town[00:03:14]
An' I was hopin' they'd do it and change things around[00:03:17]
I hoped they'd pull Judge Thayer on down[00:03:21]
From off of his bench and they'd chase him around[00:03:24]
Hoped they'd run him around this stump[00:03:27]
And stick him with a devil tails about ever' jump[00:03:30]
Wash this tequila down with gin[00:03:35]
An' a double straight shot of your black Virgin rum[00:03:38]
My ale bubbled out an' my champagne is flat[00:03:42]
I hear the man comin' I'm grabbin' my hat[00:03:46]
