Gus The Theatre Cat - Sarah Brightman[00:00:01]
Written by:A.L. Weber/Trevor Nunn/Richard Stilgoe[00:00:02]
Sarah:[00:00:04]
Gus is the cat at the theatre door[00:00:07]
His name as I ought to have told you before[00:00:13]
Is really asparagus but that's a fuss to pronounce[00:00:19]
That we usually call him just Gus[00:00:26]
His coat's very shabby he's thin as a rake[00:00:32]
And he suffers from palsy that makes his paw shake[00:00:38]
For he was in his youth quite the smartest of cats[00:00:43]
But no longer a terror to mice or to rats[00:00:50]
For he isn't the cat that he was in his prime[00:00:56]
Though his name was quite famous he says in his time[00:01:01]
And whenever he joins his friends at their club[00:01:08]
Which takes place at the back of the neighbouring pub[00:01:13]
He loves to regale them if someone else pays[00:01:19]
With anecdotes drawn from his palmiest days[00:01:24]
For he once was a star of the highest degree[00:01:29]
He has acted with Irving he's acted with Tree[00:01:35]
And he likes to relate his success on the halls[00:01:41]
Where the gallery once gave him seven cat calls[00:01:46]
But his grandest creation as he loves to tell[00:01:53]
Was Firefrorefiddle the fiend of the fell[00:02:01]
Sir John:[00:02:11]
I have played in my time every possible part[00:02:16]
And I used to know seventy speeches by heart[00:02:22]
I'd extemporize backchat I knew how to gag[00:02:27]
And I knew how to let the cat out of the bag[00:02:33]
I knew how to act with my back and my tail[00:02:38]
With an hour of rehearsal I never could fail[00:02:43]
I'd a voice that would soften the hardest of hearts[00:02:48]
Whether I took the lead or in character parts[00:02:53]
I have sat by the bedside of poor little Nell[00:02:59]
When the curfew was rung then I swung on the bell[00:03:04]
In the pantomime season I never fell flat[00:03:09]
And I once understudied Dick Whittington's cat[00:03:13]
My grandest creation as history will tell[00:03:19]
Was Firefrorefiddle the fiend of the fell[00:03:25]
Sarah:[00:03:32]
Then if someone will give him a toothful of gin[00:03:38]
He will tell how he once played a part in East Lynne[00:03:43]
At a Shakespeare performance he once walked on pat[00:03:47]
When some actor suggested the need for a cat[00:03:52]
Sir John:[00:03:57]
And I say now these kittens they do not get trained[00:03:58]
As we did in the days when Victoria reigned[00:04:04]
They never get drilled in a regular troupe[00:04:10]
And they think they are smart just to jump through a hoop[00:04:14]
Sarah:[00:04:19]
And he says as he scratches himself with his claws[00:04:19]
Sir John:[00:04:25]
Well the theatre is certainly not what is was[00:04:25]
These modern productions are all very well[00:04:32]
But there's nothing to equal from what I hear tell[00:04:37]
That moment of mystery when I made history[00:04:43]
As Firefrorefiddle the fiend of the fell[00:04:49]
