American Dreamers - Old Home Movie - Goran Bregovic[00:00:00]
One thing I was sure of[00:00:00]
That my uncle Leo was definitely the hero of my childhood[00:00:02]
The smell of his old spice cologne carried me[00:00:07]
Back into that lost childhood more than the home movies did[00:00:09]
My uncle didn't know it but it was the sweet[00:00:13]
Cheap smell of car dealers that took me back[00:00:16]
And made me dissolve into a dream of the past[00:00:18]
Leo was the last dinosaur that smelled of cheap cologne[00:00:22]
And he believed in the American dream[00:00:26]
I was crazy about him because he believed in miracles[00:00:29]
And Even though he lived inside of life and sold Cadillacs[00:00:32]
He always looked like a ten-year-old boy whose sleeves were too long[00:00:36]
When I was ten Leo gave me this great movie camera[00:00:41]
And my mother always hoped I'd become the next Milton Berle[00:00:44]
But dreams of houses and cars and fresh-cut lawns[00:00:47]
Aren't dreams when they become real[00:00:50]
And somehow I understood what my mother[00:00:52]
Meant by good morning Columbus[00:00:55]
And even if my mother didn't like[00:00:57]
What I was doing with my life[00:00:58]
I think she'd understand[00:01:01]
When I was 11 I got this really weird earache[00:01:06]
That wouldn't go away[00:01:08]
I went to about a hundred doctors[00:01:10]
But none of them could help me[00:01:12]
So what Leo did was he went into Mexico[00:01:13]
And brought back this fat lady witch doctor[00:01:16]
Who did this mumbo-jumbo and fixed me right up[00:01:18]
I was grateful but somehow I thought[00:01:21]
I might've been better off mute[00:01:23]
All in all I had a very happy childhood[00:01:26]
My father was a border guard who spent most of his life[00:01:29]
Trying to keep people from crossing lines[00:01:31]
Every night for 15 years he'd go out and smooth[00:01:34]
Down the road between Mexico and Arizona[00:01:36]
And every morning he'd be out there[00:01:39]
Looking for footprints in the dirt[00:01:40]
But my father always said that work was like a hat[00:01:43]
You put on your head[00:01:45]
And even if you didn't have pants[00:01:46]
You didn't have to walk[00:01:48]
Down the street ashamed of your a*s[00:01:48]
So long as you had a hat[00:01:50]
And if somebody was to ask me[00:03:06]
Why I don't get up right now[00:03:07]
And take the next train back to New York[00:03:08]
It's because you can't say no to your childhood hero[00:03:11]
I decided to be his best man[00:03:14]
But one thing I was sure of[00:03:16]
No matter how much I loved the smell of cheap cologne[00:03:18]
I was never going to become my uncle[00:03:21]
And I was never going to sell Cadillacs[00:03:24]
