The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest[00:00:02]
(mono version) - Bob Dylan[00:00:04]
Well Frankie Lee and Judas Priest[00:00:13]
They were the best of friends[00:00:16]
So when Frankie Lee needed money one day[00:00:19]
Judas quickly pulled out a roll of tens[00:00:23]
And placed them on a footstool[00:00:27]
Just above the plotted plain[00:00:29]
Sayin’ “Take your pick Frankie Boy[00:00:32]
My loss will be your gain”[00:00:36]
Well Frankie Lee he sat right down[00:00:39]
And put his fingers to his chin[00:00:42]
But with the cold eyes of Judas on him[00:00:45]
His head began to spin[00:00:49]
“Would ya please not stare at me like that ”[00:00:52]
He said[00:00:55]
“It’s just my foolish pride[00:00:55]
But sometimes a man must be alone[00:00:58]
And this is no place to hide”[00:01:01]
Well Judas he just winked and said[00:01:04]
“All right I’ll leave you here[00:01:07]
But you’d better hurry up and choose[00:01:11]
Which of those bills you want[00:01:13]
Before they all disappear”[00:01:15]
“I’m gonna start my pickin’ right now[00:01:18]
Just tell me where you’ll be”[00:01:20]
Judas pointed down the road[00:01:24]
And said “Eternity ”[00:01:26]
“Eternity ” said Frankie Lee[00:01:30]
With a voice as cold as ice[00:01:33]
“That’s right ” said Judas Priest “Eternity[00:01:37]
Though you might call it ‘Paradise’”[00:01:39]
“I don’t call it anything”[00:01:43]
Said Frankie Lee with a smile[00:01:46]
“All right ” said Judas Priest[00:01:49]
“I’ll see you after a while”[00:01:52]
Well Frankie Lee he sat back down[00:01:55]
Feelin’ low and mean[00:01:58]
When just then a passing stranger[00:02:01]
Burst upon the scene[00:02:04]
Saying “Are you Frankie Lee the gambler[00:02:07]
Whose father is deceased [00:02:10]
Well if you are [00:02:14]
There’s a fellow callin’[00:02:15]
You down the road[00:02:16]
And they say his name is Priest”[00:02:17]
“Oh yes he is my friend”[00:02:20]
Said Frankie Lee in fright[00:02:23]
“I do recall him very well[00:02:27]
In fact he just left my sight”[00:02:29]
“Yes that’s the one ”[00:02:33]
Said the stranger[00:02:34]
As quiet as a mouse[00:02:35]
“Well my message is [00:02:38]
He’s down the road[00:02:40]
Stranded in a house”[00:02:42]
Well Frankie Lee he panicked[00:02:45]
He dropped ev’rything and ran[00:02:48]
Until he came up to the spot[00:02:51]
Where Judas Priest did stand[00:02:54]
“What kind of house is this ”[00:02:58]
He said[00:03:00]
“Where I have come to roam ”[00:03:00]
“It’s not a house ” said Judas Priest[00:03:04]
“It’s not a house it’s a home”[00:03:07]
Well Frankie Lee he trembled[00:03:10]
He soon lost all control[00:03:12]
Over ev’rything which he had made[00:03:16]
While the mission bells did toll[00:03:19]
He just stood there staring[00:03:23]
At that big house as bright as any sun[00:03:25]
With four and twenty windows[00:03:29]
And a woman’s face in ev’ry one[00:03:32]
Well up the stairs ran Frankie Lee[00:03:35]
With a soulful bounding leap[00:03:38]
And foaming at the mouth[00:03:42]
He began to make his midnight creep[00:03:44]
For sixteen nights and days he raved[00:03:48]
But on the seventeenth he burst[00:03:51]
Into the arms of Judas Priest[00:03:54]
Which is where he died of thirst[00:03:57]
No one tried to say a thing[00:04:01]
When they took him out in jest[00:04:03]
Except of course [00:04:07]
The little neighbor boy[00:04:08]
Who carried him to rest[00:04:10]
And he just walked along alone[00:04:13]
With his guilt so well concealed[00:04:15]
And muttered underneath his breath[00:04:19]
“Nothing is revealed”[00:04:22]
Well the moral of the story[00:04:37]
The moral of this song[00:04:41]
Is simply that one should never be[00:04:44]
Where one does not belong[00:04:47]
So when you see your neighbor carryin’[00:04:50]
Somethin’[00:04:52]
Help him with his load[00:04:53]
And don’t go mistaking Paradise[00:04:57]
For that home across the road[00:04:58]
