Little Joe the Wrangler - Marty Robbins[00:00:00]
Written by:N. Howard Jack Thorp[00:00:02]
Little Joe the wrangler will wrangle nevermore[00:00:06]
His days with the roundup they are o'er[00:00:11]
Was a year ago last April when he rode into our camp[00:00:16]
Just a little Texas stray and nothing more[00:00:22]
Was late in the evening when he rode into our camp[00:00:27]
On the little Texas pony he called Chaw[00:00:33]
With his brogan shoes and overalls a tougher looking kid[00:00:38]
You never in your life before had saw[00:00:43]
His saddle was a Texas Kack built many years ago[00:00:49]
An ok spur on one foot lightly swung[00:00:54]
With his packroll in a cotton sack so loosely tied behind[00:00:59]
And a canteen from his saddle horn was slung[00:01:05]
He said he had to leave his home his pa had married twice[00:01:10]
His new ma whipped him every day or two[00:01:16]
So he saddled up old Chaw one night and lit a shuck his way[00:01:21]
He said he'd try to paddle his own canoe[00:01:27]
He said if we would give him work he'd do the best he could[00:01:32]
Though he didn't know straight up about a cow[00:01:37]
So the boss he cut him out a mount and kindly put him on[00:01:43]
He sorta liked this little kid somehow[00:01:48]
He learned to wrangle horses and learned to know them all[00:01:54]
And get them in at daybreak if he could[00:01:59]
And to trail the old chuck wagon and always hitch the team[00:02:04]
And help to cook each evening rustle wood[00:02:10]
We had hardly reached the Pecos the weather it was fine[00:02:15]
We were camped down on the south side in a draw[00:02:20]
When a northern commenced blowing and we doubled up our guards[00:02:25]
It took every one of us to hold them in[00:02:31]
Little Joe the wrangler was called out with the rest[00:02:37]
Scarcely had the little fellow reached the herd[00:02:41]
When the cattle they stampeded like a hailstorm on they fled[00:02:47]
And everyone was ridin' for the lead[00:02:52]
Amid the streaks of lightnin' there was one horse up ahead[00:02:58]
He was tryin' to check the leaders in their speed[00:03:03]
It was little Joe the wrangler with a slicker o'er his head[00:03:09]
He was ridin' old blue rocket in the lead[00:03:14]
At last we got them millin' and kinda quited down[00:03:19]
And the extra guards back to the wagon went[00:03:25]
But there was one a missin' we could see it at a glance[00:03:30]
Was our little Texas stray poor wrangler Joe[00:03:35]
Next morning just at daybreak we found where rocket fell[00:03:41]
Down in a washout twenty feet below[00:03:46]
Beneath his horse his life had gone his spung had run its knell[00:03:51]
Was our little Texas stray poor wrangler Joe[00:03:56]
