The Half-Hitch - Pete Seeger (皮特·西格)[00:00:00]
A noble rich man in Plymouth did dwell[00:00:07]
He had but one daughter [00:00:10]
A beautiful girl[00:00:12]
A handsome young farmer[00:00:14]
With riches supplied[00:00:16]
He courted this fair[00:00:18]
Maid to make her his bride[00:00:19]
He courted her long[00:00:25]
And gained her love[00:00:26]
And then she intended[00:00:28]
This young man to prove[00:00:30]
When he asked her to marry[00:00:33]
She quickly replied[00:00:34]
And told him right off[00:00:36]
She would not be his bride[00:00:37]
He vowed then that home[00:00:41]
He quickly would steer[00:00:42]
And by a sad oath to her[00:00:45]
He did swear[00:00:47]
How he'd wed the first woman[00:00:50]
That ever he did see[00:00:51]
If she was as mean as a beggar could be[00:00:53]
She ordered her servants[00:00:58]
This man to delay[00:01:00]
Her jewels and rings [00:01:02]
She laid them away[00:01:04]
She put on the worst of old[00:01:07]
Rags she could find[00:01:08]
She looked like a teapot[00:01:10]
Before and behind[00:01:11]
She rubbed both her hands[00:01:15]
On the old chimney back[00:01:17]
And then blackened[00:01:19]
Her face from corner to crack[00:01:20]
Then around to the road[00:01:23]
She flew like witch[00:01:24]
With her petticoats[00:01:26]
Hoisted all on the half hitch[00:01:27]
The young man came riding[00:01:31]
And when he did see her[00:01:32]
He cried out alas for[00:01:34]
His oath he did fear[00:01:36]
But being so faithful[00:01:39]
To keep his words true[00:01:41]
He soon overtook her [00:01:42]
Saying Pray who are you [00:01:44]
I am a woman[00:01:47]
This answer did suit[00:01:50]
Him as well as the rest[00:01:51]
It lay very heavy[00:01:54]
And hard on his breast[00:01:55]
How can I bear for[00:01:58]
To make her my bride [00:02:00]
But still he did ask her[00:02:01]
Behind him to ride[00:02:03]
Your horse will throw me I know[00:02:06]
No he replied [00:02:09]
My horse he will not[00:02:10]
So then she climbed up[00:02:12]
And behind him she got[00:02:14]
He wished himself well[00:02:17]
From his promises free[00:02:18]
But he turned to her saying [00:02:20]
Will you marry me [00:02:22]
Yes I will[00:02:25]
My heart it doth fail me [00:02:28]
I dare not go home[00:02:30]
My parents will think[00:02:31]
I am sorely undone[00:02:33]
I will leave you here[00:02:36]
With my neighbor to tarry[00:02:37]
Within a few days[00:02:39]
With you I will marry[00:02:40]
You won't I know[00:02:43]
He said that he would[00:02:46]
And home he did go[00:02:47]
He soon told his father[00:02:49]
And mother also[00:02:50]
Of his woeful case[00:02:52]
And how he had sworn[00:02:54]
His parents said to him [00:02:56]
For that do not mourn[00:02:57]
Oh never break your vows [00:02:59]
But bring home your girl[00:03:01]
We'll soon snug her up[00:03:02]
And she'll do very well[00:03:04]
They asked his old spark[00:03:07]
To the wedding to come[00:03:09]
Her servants replied[00:03:10]
That she was not at home[00:03:12]
They invited her maidens[00:03:15]
To wait on her there[00:03:16]
And then for the wedding[00:03:18]
They all did prepare[00:03:20]
Published the banns[00:03:21]
And invited the guests[00:03:23]
And then they intended[00:03:25]
The bride for to dress[00:03:26]
I'll just be married in my old clothes[00:03:29]
When they were married [00:03:33]
They sat down to eat[00:03:35]
With her fingers she hauled[00:03:36]
Out the cabbage and meat[00:03:38]
His friends talk to her[00:03:41]
Called to his bride[00:03:43]
Saying pray go along[00:03:44]
And sit by his side[00:03:46]
I'll just sit in the[00:03:49]
Chimney corner like I'm used to[00:03:50]
She burned all her fingers[00:03:53]
In the pudding I fear[00:03:55]
Then she wiped[00:03:56]
Them all on her old rags of write[00:03:57]
They gave her a candle [00:04:01]
What could she want more[00:04:02]
And showed her the way[00:04:04]
To the chamber door[00:04:05]
Husband when you hear[00:04:08]
My shoes go clunk [00:04:10]
You may come along[00:04:12]
Then she Upstairs[00:04:15]
And kept stepping about[00:04:17]
His mother said to him [00:04:19]
What think is the rout [00:04:20]
He cried out Dear Mother [00:04:22]
Pray don't say a word[00:04:23]
For never any comfort[00:04:25]
Can this world afford[00:04:27]
A little while later [00:04:30]
Her shoes they went clunk[00:04:31]
They gave him a candle[00:04:34]
And bade him go along[00:04:35]
Upstairs then he went[00:04:38]
And quickly he found[00:04:39]
As handsome a lady as[00:04:41]
Ever stepped the ground[00:04:43]
All dressed in the richest of clothes to behold[00:04:45]
She was finer and fairer than pictures of gold[00:04:50]
He greatly rejoiced at this end to his fears[00:04:54]
For he had married the lady he courted for years[00:04:58]
