Fancy

Fancy - Snow Patrol (雪地巡游者)[00:00:00]

I remember it all very well lookin' back[00:00:01]

It was the summer I turned eighteen[00:00:04]

We lived in a one room rundown shack[00:00:06]

On the outskirts of New Orleans[00:00:09]

We didn't have money for food or rent[00:00:11]

To say the least we were hard pressed[00:00:13]

Then Mama spent every last penny we had[00:00:16]

To buy me a dancin' dress[00:00:18]

Mama washed and combed and curled my hair[00:00:21]

And she painted my eyes and lips then I stepped into a satin[00:00:23]

Dancin' dress that had a split on the side clean up to my hip[00:00:27]

It was red velvet trim and it fit me good[00:00:31]

Standin' back from the lookin' glass[00:00:35]

There stood a woman where a half gown kid had stood[00:00:37]

She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:00:40]

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:00:45]

Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck[00:01:01]

And she kissed my cheek[00:01:04]

Then I saw the tears wellin' up in her troubled eyes[00:01:05]

When she started to speak[00:01:08]

She looked at a pitiful shack[00:01:10]

And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath[00:01:12]

She said your Pa's run off and I'm real sick[00:01:15]

And the baby's gonna starve to death[00:01:17]

She handed me a heart shaped locket that said[00:01:19]

"To thine own self be true"[00:01:21]

And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across[00:01:24]

The toe of my high heel shoe[00:01:26]

It sounded like somebody else that was talkin'[00:01:29]

Askin' Mama what do I do[00:01:31]

She said just be nice to the gentlemen Fancy[00:01:33]

And they'll be nice to you[00:01:35]

She said here's your chance Fancy don't let me down[00:01:38]

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:01:42]

Lord forgive me for what I do but if you want out[00:01:47]

Well it's up to you[00:01:51]

Now don't let me down you better start movin' uptown[00:01:52]

Well that was the last time I saw my Ma[00:01:59]

The night I left that rickety shack[00:02:01]

The welfare people came and took the baby[00:02:03]

Mama died and I ain't been back[00:02:05]

But the wheels of fate had started to turn[00:02:08]

And for me there was no way out[00:02:10]

And it wasn't very long 'til I knew exactly[00:02:12]

What my Mama's been talkin' about[00:02:14]

I knew what I had to do but I made myself this solemn vow[00:02:17]

That I's gonna be a lady someday[00:02:22]

Though I don't know when or how[00:02:24]

I couldn't see spending the rest of my life[00:02:26]

With my head hung down in shame you know[00:02:28]

I might have been born just plain white trash[00:02:31]

But Fancy was my name[00:02:33]

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:02:35]

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:02:40]

It wasn't very long after a benevolent man[00:02:47]

Took me off the street[00:02:49]

And one week later I was pourin' his tea[00:02:51]

In a five room hotel suite[00:02:54]

I charmed a king a congressman[00:02:56]

And an occasional aristocrat[00:02:58]

Then I got me a Georgia mansion[00:03:00]

In an elegant New York townhouse flat[00:03:02]

And I ain't done bad[00:03:05]

Now in this world there's a lot of self-righteous hypocrite[00:03:15]

That would call me bad[00:03:16]

And criticize Mama for turning me out[00:03:19]

No matter how little we had[00:03:21]

But though I ain't had to worry 'bout nothin'[00:03:23]

For nigh on fifteen years[00:03:26]

I can still hear the desperation in my poor[00:03:28]

Mama's voice ringin' in my ear[00:03:30]

She said here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:03:32]

Here's your one chance Fancy don't let me down[00:03:37]

Lord forgive me for what I do[00:03:42]

But if you want out well it's up to you[00:03:43]

Now don't let me down[00:03:46]

Your Mama's gonna help you uptown[00:03:47]

I guess she did[00:03:53]
