A certain father had a family of sons[00:00:02]

Who were forever quarreling among themselves[00:00:06]

No words he could say did the least good[00:00:10]

So he cast about in his mind for some very striking example[00:00:13]

That should make them see that discord would lead them to misfortune[00:00:18]

One day[00:00:25]

When the quarreling had been much more violent than usual[00:00:26]

And each of the sons was moping in a surly manner[00:00:30]

He asked one of them to bring him a bundle of sticks[00:00:34]

Then handing the bundle to each of his sons in turn[00:00:38]

He told them to try to break it[00:00:42]

But although each one tried his best none was able to do so[00:00:46]

The father then untied the bundle[00:00:52]

And gave the sticks to his sons to break one by one[00:00:53]

This they did very easily[00:00:58]

My sons said the father[00:01:01]

Do you not see how certain it is[00:01:05]

That if you agree with each other and help each other[00:01:08]

It will be impossible for your enemies to injure you[00:01:11]

But if you are divided among yourselves[00:01:16]
