Ode to Billie Joe - Stella Parton[00:00:00]
Written by:Bobbie Gentry[00:00:01]
It was the third of June another sleepy dusty Delta day[00:00:07]
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay[00:00:15]
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat[00:00:23]
And mama hollered out the back door y'all remember to wipe your feet[00:00:32]
And then she said I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge[00:00:40]
Today Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge[00:00:48]
And papa said to mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas[00:00:56]
Well Billie Joe never had a lick of sense pass the biscuits please[00:01:04]
There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow[00:01:12]
And mama said it was shame about Billie Joe anyhow[00:01:21]
Seems like nothin' ever comes to[00:01:29]
No good up on Choctaw Ridge[00:01:31]
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge[00:01:37]
And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie Joe[00:01:45]
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show[00:01:53]
And wasn't I talking to him after church last Sunday night[00:02:01]
I'll have another piece-a apple pie you know it don't seem right[00:02:09]
I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge[00:02:18]
And now you tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge[00:02:26]
And mama said to me Child what's happened to your appetite[00:02:34]
I've been cookin' all morning and you haven't touched a single bite[00:02:42]
That nice young preacher Brother Taylor he stop by today[00:02:51]
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday oh by the way[00:02:58]
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge[00:03:06]
And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge[00:03:14]
A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Billie Joe[00:03:23]
And brother married Becky Thompson they bought a store in Tupelo[00:03:31]
There was a virus going 'round papa caught it and he died last spring[00:03:39]
And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything[00:03:47]
And me I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge[00:03:55]
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge[00:04:03]
