Politics Of Grooming - Slaughter Beach, Dog[00:00:01]
Written by:Jake Ewald[00:00:05]
I know the you when you are getting dressed[00:00:06]
Is not the you I've really come to know[00:00:11]
She speaks in shorter phrases[00:00:17]
And she often can't remember[00:00:19]
Which impulsive words were emitted as response[00:00:22]
But it's not as selfish or as spanned attention[00:00:28]
Rather preference for the politics of grooming[00:00:34]
Hell I'd paint my face and fingers[00:00:39]
And my toes and lips and eyelids[00:00:42]
If it meant tonight I didn't have to think about the future[00:00:45]
Just to fixate my attention on a wooden powder pencil[00:00:51]
Not a single thought devoted[00:00:56]
To whatever's on outside the house[00:00:59]
Or even past the door your mother's bathroom[00:01:03]
Where we're sitting[00:01:06]
And surviving on the steadiness of passing time[00:01:08]
So when the lines are drawn and all the powders matted[00:01:14]
You'll be standing there blinking at your image[00:01:19]
And you wished that it would turn around[00:01:25]
And do what it's supposed to[00:01:28]
But reflections do not turn themselves away[00:01:31]
When you were younger and your mother started drinking[00:01:40]
She would tuck you in and close your bedroom door[00:01:45]
Then one day you sprung awake[00:01:51]
Inside a turning twisted dream[00:01:53]
And you ran downstairs to find her laying out across the floor[00:01:56]
She did not hear you softly crying near[00:02:02]
Or feel your mouth all hot against her ear[00:02:08]
So you kissed her like she taught you[00:02:14]
And for the first time on a you got up[00:02:16]
And tucked your own self in the bed[00:02:20]
So when the lines are drawn and all the powders matted[00:02:25]
You'll be standing there blinking at your image[00:02:31]
And you wished that it would turn around[00:02:37]
And do what it's supposed to[00:02:39]
But reflections do not turn themselves away[00:02:42]
Yeah you wished that you would turn around[00:02:48]
And do what you're supposed to[00:02:51]
But it's easier to blink and stare and stay[00:02:54]
