Maria Teresa Teresa Maria (Live) - Laurie Anderson[00:00:00]
Last spring I spent a week in a convent in the midwest[00:00:03]
I'd been invited there to do a[00:00:10]
Series of seminars on language[00:00:11]
They'd gotten my name from a list in washington[00:00:16]
From a brochure that described my work as[00:00:20]
Deals with the spiritual issues of our time[00:00:24]
Undoubtedly a blurb I had written myself[00:00:29]
Because of this and also because men[00:00:36]
Were not allowed to enter the convert[00:00:40]
They asked me to come out[00:00:44]
The night I arrived they had a party[00:00:48]
For me in a nearby town[00:00:51]
In a downstairs lounge of a crystal[00:00:53]
Lane's bowling alley[00:00:56]
The alley was reserved for the nuns[00:01:00]
For their tuesday night tournaments[00:01:03]
It was a pizza party[00:01:07]
And the lounge was decorated to look like a cave[00:01:10]
Every surface was covered with that spray on rock[00:01:15]
That's usually used for soundproofing in this case[00:01:19]
It had the opposite effect: it amplified every sound[00:01:25]
Now the nuns were in the middle[00:01:31]
Of their annual tournament playoffs[00:01:33]
And we could hear all the bowling balls[00:01:36]
Rolling very slowly down the aisles above us[00:01:38]
Making the rock club stalactites[00:01:43]
Tremble and resonate[00:01:46]
Finally the pizza arrived and the mother superior[00:01:51]
Began to bless the food[00:01:56]
Now this woman normally had a[00:01:59]
Gruffed low pitched[00:02:01]
Speaking voice but as soon as she[00:02:02]
Began to pray her voice rose[00:02:05]
Became pure bell like like a child's[00:02:10]
The prayer went on and on increasing[00:02:20]
In volume each time a sister got a strike[00:02:23]
Rising in pitch dear father in heaven[00:02:26]
The next day I was scheduled to begin[00:02:38]
This seminar on language[00:02:41]
I'd been very struck by this prayer and[00:02:44]
I wanted to talk about how[00:02:47]
Women's voices rise in pitch[00:02:48]
When they're asking for things[00:02:52]
Especially from men[00:02:55]
But it was odd every time I set[00:02:58]
A time for the seminar[00:03:01]
There was some reason to postpone it[00:03:03]
The potatoes had to be dug out[00:03:06]
Or a busload of old people would[00:03:09]
Appear out of nowhere[00:03:12]
And have to be shown around[00:03:16]
So I never actually did the seminar[00:03:19]
But I spent a lot of time there[00:03:25]
Walking around the grounds[00:03:28]
And looking at all the crops[00:03:30]
Which were all labeled[00:03:32]
And there was also a neatly laid out cemetery[00:03:35]
Hundreds of identical white crosses in rows[00:03:39]
And there were labeled maria[00:03:44]
Teresa maria teresa[00:03:49]
Teresa maria and the only sadder cemetery[00:03:55]
I saw was last summer in switzerland[00:04:00]
And I was dragged there by a[00:04:06]
Hermann hesse fanatic[00:04:07]
Very serecirely swide[00:04:10]
Who had never recovered from reading[00:04:12]
And one hot august morning[00:04:16]
When the sky was quiet[00:04:19]
We made a pilgrimage to the cemetery[00:04:21]
We brought a lot of flowers and we[00:04:25]
Finally found his grave[00:04:28]
It was marked with a huge fur tree and[00:04:30]
A mammoth stone[00:04:33]
That said hesse in huge helvetica bold letters[00:04:35]
It looked more like a marquee than a tombstone[00:04:41]
And around the corner was this[00:04:44]
Tiny stone for his wife[00:04:47]
Nina and on it was one word auslander foreigner[00:04:49]
And this made me so sad and so mad[00:05:02]
That I was sorry[00:05:07]
I'd brought the flowers anyway I[00:05:08]
Decided to leave the flowers[00:05:13]
Along with a mean note and it read[00:05:16]
Even though you're not my favorite[00:05:23]
Writer by long shots[00:05:24]
I leave these flowers on your resting spot[00:05:32]
