Peter Anderson & Co (1996 Digital Remaster) - Slim Dusty[00:00:00]
Written by:Slim Dusty/Henry Lawson[00:00:02]
He had offices in Sydney many years ago[00:00:16]
And his shingle bore the legend peter anderson and co[00:00:22]
But his real name was careless as the fellows understood[00:00:29]
And his relatives decided that he wasn't any good[00:00:34]
'Twas their gentle tongues that blasted any character' he had[00:00:41]
He was fond of beer and leisure and the co was just as bad[00:00:46]
It was limited in number to a unit was the co[00:00:53]
'Twas a bosom chum of Peter and his christian name was Joe[00:00:58]
Oh the office was their haven for they lived there when hard up[00:01:05]
A daily' for a table cloth a jam tin for a cup[00:01:10]
If the chance the landlord's bailiff happened round in times like these[00:01:16]
Just to seize the office fittings well there wasn't much to seize[00:01:22]
And when morning brought the bailiff there'd be nothing to be seen[00:01:28]
Save a piece of bevelled cedar where the tenant's plate had been[00:01:34]
And there'd be no sign of Peter and there'd be no sign of Joe[00:01:40]
But another portal boasted Peter anderson and co[00:01:46]
Peter always met you smiling always seemed to know you well[00:01:52]
Always gay and glad to see you always had a joke to tell[00:01:58]
He could laugh when all was gloomy he could grin when all was blue[00:02:04]
Sing a comic song and act it and appreciate one too[00:02:10]
Glorious drunk and happy till they heard the roosters crow[00:02:16]
And the landlady and neighbours made complaints about the co[00:02:21]
But that life it might be likened to a reckless drinking song[00:02:28]
But it couldn't last for ever and it never lasted long[00:02:33]
Debt collecting ruined peter people talked him round too oft[00:02:53]
For his heart was soft as butter and the co's was just as soft[00:02:58]
But of course it wasn't business only Peter's careless way[00:03:05]
And perhaps it pays in heaven but on earth it doesn't pay[00:03:10]
They got harder up than ever and to make it worse the co[00:03:17]
Went more often round the corner than was good for him to go[00:03:22]
I might live he said to peter but I haven't got the nerve[00:03:29]
I am going Peter going going no reserve[00:03:34]
Peter's fault is very common feeling fitting and bereft[00:03:42]
Paid the undertaker cash and then got drunk on what was left[00:03:47]
Then he shed some tears half maudlin on the grave where lay the co[00:03:54]
And he drifted to a township where the city failures go[00:03:59]
In a town of wrecks and failures they appreciated him[00:04:06]
Men who might have been who had been but who were not in the swim[00:04:11]
They would ask him who the co was that queer company he kept[00:04:17]
And he'd always answer vaguely he would say his partner slept[00:04:23]
That he had a sleeping partner' jesting while his spirit broke[00:04:29]
And they grinned above their glasses for they took it for a joke[00:04:34]
Till at last there came a morning when his smile was seen no more[00:04:41]
He was gone from out the office and his shingle from the door[00:04:46]
And a boundary rider jogging out across the neighb'ring run[00:04:53]
Was attracted by a something that was blazing in the sun[00:04:58]
And he found that it was peter lying peacefully at rest[00:05:05]
With a bottle close beside him and the shingle on his breast[00:05:10]
Yes he had offices in Sydney many years ago[00:05:17]
And his shingle bore the legend Peter anderson and co[00:05:23]
