Kentucky, February 27, 1971 - Tom T. Hall[00:00:00]
There were signs beside[00:00:05]
The road like "Jesus Saves"[00:00:07]
And "Relieve yourself the fast and gentle way"[00:00:11]
I was lookin' for an old man[00:00:16]
Who lived way back in these hills[00:00:19]
Who just might have a story I could tell[00:00:22]
Pretty soon the blacktop disappeared[00:00:28]
I felt the car change to a lower gear[00:00:33]
I took a drink of liquor[00:00:39]
Just to chase away the chill[00:00:41]
I was 27 miles from Olive Hill[00:00:44]
Ahead I saw the bridge where I turned right[00:00:50]
A dirt road led straight up a mountainside[00:00:56]
I pulled up to a farmhouse[00:01:01]
I thought I had seen before[00:01:04]
An old man and his dog were at the door[00:01:07]
They told me this old-timer knew this land[00:01:12]
I told him, "Sir, I just don't understand[00:01:18]
Why the kids in this state[00:01:24]
Just grow up and move away[00:01:26]
And leave the land where[00:01:29]
They were born and raised."[00:01:31]
He said, "Son, you can't make it on this land[00:01:35]
Unless you're happy workin' with your hands[00:01:40]
There ain't no kids today[00:01:46]
That wanna stay and work it out[00:01:48]
They wanna see the things they hear about."[00:01:52]
He said, "I cleared this whole farm off myself[00:01:57]
And I'd work it now but time has got my health."[00:02:03]
Then starin' out the window restin' in his easy chair[00:02:08]
He told me what I'd really come to hear[00:02:14]
"You know, son, people used to tell their kids[00:02:19]
'Now, I don't want you to[00:02:25]
Have to work the way I did.'[00:02:26]
They don't and some will tell you that it's a shame[00:02:30]
But you have to think before you place the blame."[00:02:36]
I guess we must have talked for half a day[00:02:42]
'Til I told him that I'd best be on my way[00:02:47]
He shook my hand and said,[00:02:53]
"I'm glad I met you, Mr. Hall[00:02:55]
But I guess there ain't no song here after all."[00:02:58]
