1913 Massacre - Ramblin' Jack Elliott[00:00:00]
Take a trip with me in nineteen thirteen[00:00:01]
To Calumet Michigan in the copper country[00:00:08]
I'll take you to place called Italian Hall[00:00:17]
And the miners are having their big Christmas ball[00:00:24]
I'll take you in a door and up a high stairs[00:00:35]
Singing and dancing is heard everywhere[00:00:40]
I will let you shake hands with the people you see[00:00:45]
And watch the kids dance 'round[00:00:51]
The big Christmas tree[00:00:56]
There's talkin' and laughin' and songs in the air[00:01:01]
And the spirit of Christmas is there everywhere[00:01:06]
Before you know it you're friends with us all[00:01:12]
And you're dancing around and around in the hall[00:01:19]
You ask about work and you ask about pay[00:01:30]
They'll tell you [00:01:34]
They make less than a dollar a day[00:01:35]
Working the copper claims risking their lives[00:01:39]
So it's fun to spend Christmas[00:01:46]
With children and wives[00:01:51]
A little girl sits down[00:01:54]
By the Christmas tree lights[00:01:55]
To play the piano so you gotta keep quiet[00:01:58]
To hear all this fun you had not realize[00:02:02]
That the copper-boss thug-men[00:02:10]
They are milling outside[00:02:14]
The copper-boss thugs stuck their heads in the door[00:02:16]
One of them yelled and he screamed "There's a fire"[00:02:20]
A lady she hollered "There's no such a thing[00:02:25]
Keep on with your party there's no such a thing"[00:02:32]
A few people rushed and it's only a few[00:02:40]
It's just the thugs and the scabs fooling you[00:02:44]
A man grabbed his daughter and carried her down[00:02:49]
But the thugs held the door and he could not get out[00:02:55]
And then others followed a hundred or more[00:03:02]
Most everybody remained on the floor[00:03:06]
The gun-thugs they laughed at their murderous joke[00:03:11]
And the children were smothered[00:03:18]
On the stair by the door[00:03:23]
Such a terrible sight I never did see[00:03:26]
We carried our children back up to their tree[00:03:31]
The scabs outside still laughed at their spree[00:03:35]
And the children that died there were seventy-three[00:03:46]
Piano played a slow funeral tune[00:03:54]
And the town was lit up by a cold Christmas moon[00:03:59]
The parents they cried and the miners they moaned[00:04:05]
See what your greed for money has done[00:04:13]
