The Blind Men and the Elephant

The Blind Men and the Elephant - Natalie Merchant[00:00:00]

It was six men of Indostan[00:00:01]

To learning much inclined [00:00:04]

Who went to see the Elephant[00:00:08]

(Though all of them were blind) [00:00:10]

That each by observation[00:00:16]

Might satisfy his mind [00:00:20]

The First approached the Elephant [00:00:39]

And happening to fall[00:00:42]

Against his broad and sturdy side [00:00:46]

At once began to bawl:[00:00:49]

"God bless me but the Elephant[00:00:52]

Is very like a wall "[00:00:57]

The Second feeling of the tusk [00:01:01]

Cried "Ho what have we here[00:01:04]

So very round and smooth and sharp [00:01:08]

To me 'tis mighty clear[00:01:11]

This wonder of an Elephant[00:01:15]

Is very like a spear "[00:01:17]

The Third approached the animal [00:01:41]

And happening to take[00:01:44]

The squirming trunk within his hands [00:01:48]

Thus boldly up and spake:[00:01:51]

"I see " quoth he "the Elephant[00:01:54]

Is very like a snake "[00:02:00]

The Fourth reached out an eager hand [00:02:03]

And felt about the knee [00:02:06]

"What most this wondrous beast is like[00:02:10]

Is mighty plain " quoth he;[00:02:13]

"'Tis clear enough the Elephant[00:02:16]

Is very like a tree "[00:02:19]

The Fifth who chanced to touch the ear [00:02:43]

Said: "E'en the blindest man[00:02:47]

Can tell what this resembles most;[00:02:51]

Deny the fact who can [00:02:53]

This marvel of an Elephant[00:02:57]

Is very like a fan "[00:02:59]

The Sixth no sooner had begun[00:03:04]

About the beast to grope [00:03:08]

Than seizing on the swinging tail[00:03:11]

That fell within his scope [00:03:14]

"I see " quoth he "the Elephant[00:03:18]

Is very like a rope "[00:03:22]

And so these men of Indostan[00:03:44]

Disputed loud and long [00:03:48]

Each in his opinion[00:03:51]

Exceeding stiff and strong [00:03:54]

Though each was partly in the right [00:03:58]

And all were in the wrong [00:04:00]

So oft in theologic wars [00:04:04]

The disputants I ween [00:04:06]

Rail on in utter ignorance[00:04:10]

Of what each other mean [00:04:13]

And prate about an Elephant[00:04:16]

Not one of them has seen[00:04:19]
