Vance - Roger Miller[00:00:00]
Written by:Cam Mullins/Robert L Russell[00:00:00]
He was born one mornin' it was cold and it[00:00:00]
Was snowin'[00:00:03]
And from the start he never had a chance[00:00:06]
And though the doctors said he couldn't live his mama[00:00:11]
Had some faith to give[00:00:15]
And they brought him to her and his mama named[00:00:17]
Him vance[00:00:19]
He was sick a long time then I used to[00:00:25]
Sit by him[00:00:29]
I'd rub his head he would squeeze my hand[00:00:31]
But he never cried he'd grit his teeth and smile[00:00:37]
At me 'cause he couldn't speak[00:00:41]
And that's when I began to respect the little man[00:00:44]
And I think vance was three right about then[00:00:49]
He started school and one day he came home and[00:00:58]
At the doorway[00:01:02]
I could tell the little man didn't want to come[00:01:03]
Inside[00:01:05]
He'd met a girl but her boyfriend smitty[00:01:09]
Had caught him walkin' home with her and nearly killed[00:01:12]
Vance[00:01:14]
But then vance never cried and the only thing that[00:01:16]
Smitty hurt was pride[00:01:21]
And he said papa do you become a man when[00:01:24]
You're twenty one[00:01:31]
And I said age doesn't make a man a man[00:01:36]
My son[00:01:42]
He looked at me so puzzled with eyes so young[00:01:47]
And kind[00:01:49]
And I think vance was seven about that time[00:01:52]
I guess they say that first love is the very[00:02:07]
Best[00:02:10]
At least it was with vance 'cause he'd scratched becky[00:02:11]
On his desk[00:02:15]
But becky went with smitty and vance was very small[00:02:19]
And he used to dream what it'd be like to[00:02:24]
Be tall[00:02:27]
And then a few years later vance came in one day[00:02:31]
And told me and his mama that he had to[00:02:35]
Go away[00:02:37]
To be fitted for a uniform and though his mama[00:02:38]
Shed a tear[00:02:43]
He kissed her and said he'd see us in two[00:02:44]
Years[00:02:48]
And he looked at me and said papa I'm gonna[00:02:50]
Be a man[00:02:53]
Well two years to the day vance came walkin' in[00:03:03]
The driveway[00:03:06]
And I didn't recognize him from his size till he[00:03:08]
Got near[00:03:11]
He came in and he hugged his mama[00:03:14]
And said hey papa little man wanna go with me[00:03:16]
Somewhere and grab a beer[00:03:20]
So we're sittin' at this table when this fella at[00:03:25]
The bar started buggin' vance[00:03:28]
Callin' him soldier but vance kept his cool[00:03:30]
And he said papa that guy is smitty and he's[00:03:38]
To be pitied now[00:03:41]
'Cause that's the same guy that used to bully me[00:03:43]
In school[00:03:45]
Then smitty said the wrong thing when he brought up[00:03:49]
Becky's name[00:03:53]
And vance finally stood and said boy what did you say[00:03:55]
And it did my heart so much good when vance[00:04:02]
Hit ole smitty[00:04:05]
And it took two of smitty's friends to carry him away[00:04:06]
Well vance left the very next mornin' and it was[00:04:11]
Cold and it was snowin'[00:04:15]
And from the first life hadn't been much fun[00:04:18]
But he had finally made a stand and he'd become[00:04:22]
A self made man[00:04:26]
And incidentally he had just turned twenty one[00:04:27]
