Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot[00:00:00]
Written by:Gordon Lightfoot[00:00:03]
The legend lives on from the chippewa on down[00:00:16]
Of the big lake they call gitche gumee[00:00:20]
The lake it is said never gives up her dead[00:00:26]
When the skies of november turn gloomy[00:00:29]
With a load of iron ore twenty six thousand tons more[00:00:35]
Than the edmund fitzgerald weighed empty[00:00:39]
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed[00:00:45]
When the gales of november came early[00:00:49]
The ship was the pride of the American side[00:00:55]
Coming back from some mill in wisconsin[00:00:58]
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most[00:01:02]
With a crew and good captain well seasoned[00:01:06]
Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms[00:01:10]
When they left fully loaded for cleveland[00:01:14]
Then later that night when the ship's bell rang[00:01:17]
Could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'[00:01:21]
The wind in the wires made a tattle tale sound[00:01:36]
When the wave broke over the railing[00:01:39]
And every man knew as the captain did too[00:01:45]
Twas the witch of november come stealin'[00:01:49]
The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait[00:01:55]
When the gales of november came slashin'[00:01:59]
When afternoon came it was freezing rain[00:02:03]
In the face of a hurricane west wind[00:02:06]
When suppertime came the old cook came on deck[00:02:26]
Saying fellas it's too rough to feed ya[00:02:30]
At seven pm a main hatchway caved in[00:02:36]
He said fellas it's been good to know ya[00:02:39]
The captain wired in he had water comin' in[00:02:45]
And the good ship and crew was in peril[00:02:49]
And later that night when his lights went out of sight[00:02:53]
Came the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald[00:02:57]
Does anyone know where the love of god goes[00:03:20]
When the waves turn the minutes to hours[00:03:24]
The searchers all say they'd have made whitefish bay[00:03:30]
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her[00:03:34]
They might have split up or they might have capsized[00:03:40]
They may have broke deep and took water[00:03:43]
And all that remains is the faces and the names[00:03:47]
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters[00:03:51]
Lake huron rolls superior sings[00:04:10]
In the rooms of her ice water mansion[00:04:14]
Old michigan steams like a young man's dreams[00:04:18]
The islands and bays are for sportsmen[00:04:22]
And farther below lake ontario[00:04:28]
Takes in what lake erie can send her[00:04:31]
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know[00:04:36]
With the gales of november remembered[00:04:39]
In a musty old hall in detroit they prayed[00:05:19]
In the maritime sailors' cathedral[00:05:22]
The church bell chimed till it rang twenty nine times[00:05:28]
For each man on the edmund fitzgerald[00:05:32]
The legend lives on from the chippewa on down[00:05:38]
Of the big lake they call gitche gumee[00:05:41]
Superior they said never gives up her dead[00:05:48]
When the gales of november come early[00:05:51]
