Ballad Of The Drover(1996 Digital Remaster)

Ballad Of The Drover - Slim Dusty[00:00:00]

Written by:Slim Dusty/Henry Lawson[00:00:01]

Across the stony ridges[00:00:08]

Across the rolling plain's[00:00:10]

Young Harry dale the drover[00:00:13]

Comes riding home again[00:00:15]

And well his stock horse bears him[00:00:19]

And light of heart is he[00:00:21]

And stoutly his old pack horse[00:00:24]

Is trotting by his knee[00:00:26]

Up queensland way with cattle[00:00:30]

He travelled regions vast[00:00:32]

And many months have vanished[00:00:35]

Since home folk saw him last[00:00:37]

He hums a song of someone[00:00:41]

He hopes to marry soon[00:00:43]

And hobble chains[00:00:46]

And camp ware[00:00:47]

Keep jingling to the tune[00:00:48]

Beyond the hazy dado[00:00:52]

Against the lower skies[00:00:54]

And yon blue line of ranges[00:00:57]

The station homestead lies[00:00:59]

Thitherward the drover[00:01:03]

Jogs through the lazy noon[00:01:05]

While hobble chains and camp ware[00:01:08]

Keep jingling to the tune[00:01:10]

An hour has filled the heavens[00:01:21]

With storm clouds inky black[00:01:23]

At times the lightning trickles[00:01:26]

Around the drover's track[00:01:28]

But Harry pushes onward[00:01:32]

His horses' strength he tries[00:01:34]

In hope to reach the river[00:01:37]

Before the flood shall rise[00:01:39]

The thunder stealing o'er him[00:01:43]

Goes rolling down the plain[00:01:45]

And squid on thirsty pastures[00:01:48]

Make's past the flashing rain[00:01:50]

And every creek and gully[00:01:54]

Sends forth it's trival flood[00:01:56]

The river runs with anger[00:01:58]

All stained with yellow mud[00:02:01]

Now Harry speaks to rover[00:02:04]

The best dog on the plains[00:02:07]

And to his hardy horses[00:02:09]

He strokes their shaggy manes[00:02:12]

We've breasted bigger rivers[00:02:15]

When floods were at their height[00:02:18]

Nor shall this gutter stop us[00:02:20]

From getting home tonight[00:02:22]

The thunder growls a warning[00:02:33]

The blue fork ligthning gleans[00:02:36]

The drover turns his horses[00:02:38]

To swim the fatal creek[00:02:40]

But oh the flood runs stronger[00:02:44]

Than e'er it ran before[00:02:46]

The saddle horse is failing[00:02:49]

And only half way o'er[00:02:51]

When flashes next the lightning[00:02:55]

The flood's grey breast is blank[00:02:57]

And a cattle dog and pack horse[00:03:00]

Are struggling up the bank[00:03:02]

But in the lonely homestead[00:03:06]

The girl shall wait in vain[00:03:08]

He'll never pass the stations[00:03:10]

In charge of stock again[00:03:13]

The faithful dog a moment[00:03:16]

Lies panting on the bank[00:03:19]

And then pluges through the current[00:03:21]

To where his master sank[00:03:24]

And round and round in circles[00:03:27]

He fights with failing strength[00:03:30]

Till ripped by wilder waters[00:03:32]

He fails and sinks at length[00:03:34]

O'er 'cross the flooded lowlands[00:03:37]

And slopes of sodden loam[00:03:40]

The pack horse struggles bravely[00:03:43]

To take dumb tidings home[00:03:45]

And mud stained wet and weary[00:03:49]

He goes by rock and tree[00:03:51]

With flagon chains and tinware[00:03:54]

All sounding eerily[00:03:56]
