Prairie Fire(Remaster)

Prairie Fire (Remaster) - Marty Robbins[00:00:00]

Written by:Joe Babcock[00:00:01]

While driving a herd of cattle out in old Nebraska way[00:00:07]

Heading east at broken bow one hot September day[00:00:10]

Trying to get to Omaha we hoped to find a buyer[00:00:14]

We never counted in the odds of a western prairie fire[00:00:17]

A hot south wind was blowing and the air was getting dry[00:00:21]

Something far away was spelling trouble in the sky[00:00:24]

Coming closer was a sound that topped the devil's choir[00:00:28]

Then we knew we had to race a raging prairie fire[00:00:31]

When all at once a flame is seen a licking at the sky[00:00:40]

And every heart is quicker and there's fear in every eye[00:00:44]

We'd just one chance to get away for there's no place to hide[00:00:47]

Gotta reach the river Platte one inch deep and one mile wide[00:00:51]

The herd is getting tired but we've got no time to rest[00:00:58]

I try to clear the red dust that is gathering in my chest[00:01:02]

From riding tail on a thousand head with the weather getting dry[00:01:05]

The black cloud in the west is warning ride ride ride[00:01:09]

The roaring heat is closer ashes falling by our side[00:01:17]

And every breeze is burning singing with its warning cry[00:01:20]

We've got to reach the river but it's still ten miles or more[00:01:24]

And close behind us we can hear that wind infernal roar[00:01:28]

But fate had other plans for we lost that fatal race[00:01:37]

We lost for neither man nor beast could long keep up the pace[00:01:40]

The mighty Platte subdued its rage but none were there to rest[00:01:44]

We did our best to get away but only I am left[00:01:47]

Now on the blackened prairie far as the eye can see[00:01:52]

The grim remains are there to show that God rules you and me[00:01:55]

Just one he left to tell the tale just one was his desire[00:01:59]

We lost our herd and thirty men to a raging prairie fire[00:02:03]
