John Brown (Live) - Bob Dylan[00:00:00]
John Brown went off to war to fight on a foreign shore[00:00:15]
His mama sure was proud of him[00:00:19]
He stood so straight and tall in his uniform and all[00:00:23]
His mama's face broke out into a grin[00:00:27]
"Oh son you look so fine [00:00:30]
I'm glad you're a son of mine[00:00:32]
Make me proud to know you own a gun[00:00:34]
Do what the captain says [00:00:38]
Lot of medals you will get[00:00:39]
We'll put them on the wall when you get home"[00:00:42]
That old train pulled out [00:00:45]
John's ma began to shout[00:00:47]
Tellin' ev'ryone in the neighborhood[00:00:50]
"That's my son that's about to go [00:00:53]
He's a soldier now you know"[00:00:55]
She made well sure her neighbors understood[00:00:57]
She got a letter once in a while [00:01:01]
Her face broke into a smile[00:01:03]
She showed them to the people from next door[00:01:05]
They bragged about her son with his uniform and gun[00:01:08]
And these things you called a good old fashioned war[00:01:12]
Then the letters ceased to come [00:01:16]
For a long time they did not come[00:01:17]
Ceased to come for about ten months or more[00:01:20]
Then when letter finally came saying [00:01:23]
"Go down and meet the train[00:01:25]
Your son is coming back from the war"[00:01:27]
She smiled and she went right down [00:01:31]
She looked up and all around[00:01:33]
She did not see her soldier son in sight[00:01:35]
When all the people passed [00:01:38]
She saw her son at last[00:01:40]
When she did she could not believe her eyes[00:01:42]
Oh his face was all shot up and his hand were blown away[00:01:46]
And he wore a metal brace around his waist[00:01:49]
He whispered kind of slow [00:01:54]
In a voice she didn't know[00:01:55]
And she couldn't even recognize his face[00:01:57]
"Oh tell me my darling son [00:02:46]
Tell me what they've done[00:02:48]
How is it that you come to be this way "[00:02:49]
He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move[00:02:53]
And his mother had to turn her face away[00:02:57]
"Don't you remember ma [00:03:01]
When I went off to war[00:03:02]
You thought it was the best thing I could do [00:03:04]
I was on the battleground [00:03:08]
You were home acting proud[00:03:10]
You weren't there standing in my shoes[00:03:12]
And I thought when I was there Lord [00:03:15]
What am I doing here [00:03:17]
Tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin'[00:03:19]
But the thing that scared me most [00:03:23]
When my enemy came close[00:03:24]
I can see that his face looked just like mine"[00:03:26]
And I couldn't help but think [00:03:30]
Through the thunder rolling and stink[00:03:32]
I was just a puppet in a play[00:03:34]
And through the roar and smoke [00:03:38]
This string it finally broke[00:03:39]
And a cannon ball blew my eyes away"[00:03:41]
As he turned away to go [00:03:56]
His mother was acting slow[00:03:58]
Seein' the metal brace that helped him stand[00:04:00]
But as he turned to leave [00:04:04]
He called his mother close[00:04:05]
And he dropped his medals down into her hand[00:04:07]
