The Gravedigger(2006 Digital Remaster)

The Gravedigger - Jake Thackray[00:00:01]

I am a grave-digger a digger of[00:00:08]

Graves I know my clay [00:00:10]

I know in my water I know in my[00:00:12]

Blood I know in my bones[00:00:14]

That you will never believe in the[00:00:16]

Things I am going to say[00:00:18]

Till you are listening in to a funeral[00:00:20]

All of your own [00:00:22]

There are uncles and aunties and nieces[00:00:24]

And nephews and sisters-in-law [00:00:26]

A family swarms with them; they teem;[00:00:28]

They are thicker than flies [00:00:30]

Sisters and brothers and cousins and[00:00:32]

Aunties and daughters galore [00:00:34]

The only time when all of them meet[00:00:36]

Is when one of them dies [00:00:38]

At the grave at the grave at the[00:00:41]

Family family grave [00:00:43]

The putting of the people in the ground [00:00:45]

There are days days when I shake[00:00:49]

My shovel at the sky [00:00:51]

Oh there are days there are days[00:00:52]

It gets you down down down;[00:00:54]

Shovel at the sky gets you down [00:00:57]

I see many different fashions of[00:01:04]

Mourning both fancy and plain [00:01:06]

There are those who go very white[00:01:08]

And stand there aghast and just gawp;[00:01:10]

They cannot manage to cry - and[00:01:13]

There's others who cannot refrain:[00:01:14]

Willy-nilly they bellow and howl[00:01:17]

At the drop of a corpse [00:01:18]

They sit in the chapel and whisper[00:01:20]

And meditate over the stiff [00:01:22]

They never speak ill of him - especially[00:01:24]

If he was close -[00:01:27]

But: "What a good family man [00:01:29]

And a wonderful friend " even if[00:01:30]

He was a palpable pain in the arse[00:01:33]

And he died of a dose [00:01:35]

At the grave at the grave at the[00:01:37]

Family family grave [00:01:39]

The putting of the people in the ground [00:01:41]

Some with no one there - at least [00:01:45]

Just a policeman and a priest [00:01:47]

There are days oh there are days[00:01:49]

It gets you down down down;[00:01:51]

Policeman and a priest gets you down [00:01:53]

Then there are those of course[00:02:01]

Who turn up and can then hardly wait[00:02:02]

For the vicar to stop and the coffin to[00:02:04]

Drop and the sobbing subside [00:02:06]

And then they are barely a blur[00:02:09]

As they sprint for the cemetery gates[00:02:10]

To go get their hands on the money [00:02:13]

The food or the widow's backside [00:02:14]

There are one or two "do"s turn out[00:02:17]

Disappointingly in the extreme [00:02:18]

Where the booze is rough and the[00:02:21]

Grub is duff and no flowers at all [00:02:22]

And the mother embarrasses you with a[00:02:25]

Sudden hysterical scream [00:02:27]

Where the coffin you came to see[00:02:29]

Off is pathetically small [00:02:31]

At the grave at the grave at the family [00:02:33]

Family grave [00:02:36]

The putting of the people in the ground [00:02:37]

In a whisper often I say "Good luck [00:02:41]

My friend Goodbye"[00:02:44]

There are days oh there are days[00:02:45]

It gets you down down down [00:02:47]

"Good luck my friend Goodbye "[00:02:49]

It gets you down [00:02:51]

They do the round of the family[00:02:57]

And pay their respects[00:02:58]

"We'll have to be going " "How nice "[00:03:01]

"How sad " And "Thanking you "[00:03:02]

They are studying form and[00:03:05]

Weighing up who it is going to be next[00:03:06]

To go under the slab Whose[00:03:09]

Turn to pay for the very next "do" [00:03:10]

I am a grave-digger a digger[00:03:13]

Of graves I know my clay [00:03:14]

I know in my water I know in[00:03:17]

My blood I know in my bones[00:03:19]

That you will never believe in the[00:03:21]

Things I am going to say[00:03:22]

Till you are listening in to a[00:03:25]

Funeral all of your own [00:03:27]

At the grave at the grave [00:03:29]

At the family family grave [00:03:31]

The putting of the people[00:03:33]

In the ground [00:03:35]

There are days days when I shake[00:03:37]

My shovel at the sky [00:03:39]

Oh there are days oh there are[00:03:41]

Days it gets you down down down;[00:03:42]

Shovel at the sky gets you down[00:03:45]
