So Happy Birthday - Laurie Anderson[00:00:01]
JOE: In our country you're free and so you're born[00:00:08]
And so they say "You're free " so happy birthday [00:00:11]
And even if you were born to lose--even if you were[00:00:16]
A complete wreck when you were born--you might still[00:00:18]
Grow up to be president because you're free [00:00:21]
GERALDINE: Today you might be an average citizen [00:00:26]
A civilian a pedestrian But tomorrow you might[00:00:28]
Be elected to some unexpected office--or sell your novel[00:00:33]
And suddenly become famous Or you could get run over[00:00:36]
By a truck and your picture could get into the papers[00:00:41]
_that_ way Because you're free and anything might happen[00:00:44]
so happy birthday [00:00:49]
JOE: Gee All those lights and all those screens [00:00:52]
The New York Experience is mind-boggling I don't think[00:00:55]
I've ever seen that many screens and I'll probably come[00:00:59]
Again It was really amazing mind-boggling [00:01:02]
GERALDINE: You're walking and you don't always realize[00:01:07]
It but you're always falling at the same time With each[00:01:09]
Step you fall forward Over and over you're falling[00:01:14]
And then catching yourself from falling And this is[00:01:19]
How you can be walking and falling at the same time [00:01:22]
JOE: Look Over there It's a real dog and it's really talking[00:01:27]
GERALDINE: I wanted you and I was looking for you [00:01:32]
But I couldn't find you I wanted you and I was looking[00:01:36]
For you all day but I couldn't find you [00:01:40]
JOE: Well I paid my money and I've got this funny feeling[00:01:46]
That somehow--you know--it's not what I paid my money for [00:01:50]
I mean I _paid_ my money and I just don't think this is[00:01:54]
What I paid my money--you know--what I paid my money for [00:01:57]
GERALDINE: No one has ever looked at me like this before [00:02:02]
No one has ever _stared_ at me for so long like this [00:02:06]
This is the first time anyone has ever looked at me like[00:02:11]
This stared at me like this for such a long time [00:02:14]
For so long [00:02:18]
JOE: Well he didn't know what to do so he just decided[00:02:20]
To watch the government and see what the government was[00:02:23]
Doing and then kind of scale it down to size--and run his[00:02:26]
Life that way [00:02:30]
GERALDINE: She said the hardest thing to teach her[00:02:32]
Three-year-old kid was what was alive and what wasn't [00:02:34]
The phone rings and she holds it out to her kid and says [00:02:38]
"It's Grandma Talk to Grandma " But she's holding a[00:02:42]
Piece of plastic And the kid says to herself: "Wait a[00:02:46]
Minute Is the phone alive Is the TV alive What about[00:02:50]
That radio What is alive in this room and what doesn't[00:02:56]
Have life " Unfortunately she doesn't know how to ask[00:03:01]
These questions [00:03:05]
JOE: We were in a large room Full of people All kinds [00:03:07]
And they had arrived at the same time And they were all[00:03:11]
Free and they were all asking themselves the same question:[00:03:14]
What is behind that curtain They were all free And they[00:03:18]
Were all wondering what would happen next [00:03:21]
GERALDINE: This is the time and this is the record of the time[00:03:24]
